MANILA, Philippines- Nagpatupad ang Philippine authorities sa Taiwan ng safety measures upang tiyakin ang kaligtasan ng overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) sa pagbayo ni bagyong “Carina” (international name: Gaemi) sa lugar noong Hulyo 24 ng gabi.
Sinabi ng Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) na wala itong natanggap na ulat ng Filipino casualty hanggang lumabas ang weather disturbance ng Taiwan nitong Huwebes, Hulyo 25.
“There were no reports of any incidents from our OFWs. Our MWOs (Migrant Workers Officers) are closely in touch with FilCom Reps and the TMAs (Taiwan Manpower Agencies) and have reminded them to report any incident relative to the typhoon,” pahayag nito.
Anito pa, natawagan ng MWOs ang TMA contacts at napag-alamang karamihan sa mga kompanya ay sumusunod sa deklarasyon ng Taiwan government ng kanselasyon ng trabaho.
“For some companies with strict quota requirements, it is up to the worker to report to work, with overtime pay. In times like this, they closely monitor the movements of the workers thru CCTV installed in the areas around the dorm. They limit the movement of the workers, especially those who go out from their dormitories,” pahayag nito.
Batay sa ulat mula sa Taiwan, inihayag ng MECO na nag-iwan ang weather disturbance ng tatlong patay at mahigit 220 na sugatan. Mula sa Hualien at Kaohsiung ang nasawi.
Samantala, inihayag ni Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac na ang Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), katuwang MECO, ay nagkasa ng mga hakbang upang magbigay ng agarang tulong sa mga OFW sa Taiwan na naapektuhan ng nasabing bagyo.
“Together with the Chairman Silvestre Bello III and the MECO, we have established a Taiwan Help Desk to monitor the situation of OFWs in Taiwan, receive reports and requests for assistance, and coordinate relief efforts for affected Taiwan OFWs,” sabi ni Cacdac.
Ani Secretary Cacdac, binabantayan ng DMW ang sitwasyon ng 4,280 OFWs sa Northern Taiwan, partikular sa Yilan County (2,098 OFWs), Keelung City (821 OFWs), at Hualien (1,361 OFWs).
Mahigpit ding binabantayan ng DMW ang 1,818 Filipino agricultural farm workers sa Nantou sa Central Taiwan.
“Our three Taiwan Migrant Workers Offices in Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Taichung are working closely with MECO in checking on the conditions of our OFWs. We have 24-hour hotlines in the Philippines and in Taiwan but we are being proactive in our monitoring. Our MWOs are coordinating with Filipino Community and dorm leaders, and are ready to provide immediate relief and assistance,” wika ni Cacdac.
Pinapayuhan ang mga Taiwan OFW na manatili sa loob ng kanilang tirahan o dormitoryo hanggang sa susunod na abiso mula sa mga awtoridad ng Taiwan.
