MANILA, Philippines- Nagpahayag ng matinding pag-aalala ang Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ukol sa napaulat na pinsala sa marine environment at corals sa Rozul Reef sa West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Sinabi ni DFA spokesperson Teresita Daza na ang Pilipinas ay “consistently raised the alarm over ecologically harmful activities, conducted by foreign vessels, in our maritime zones, an issue extensively discussed in the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea (SCS).”
“We, therefore, call on everyone concerned to act responsibly and cease all activities that can damage our precious marine environment. The well-being of millions of people who depend on the South China Sea for their livelihood is at stake,” dagdag na pahayag nito.
Iniugnay naman ni Senador Francis Tolentino ang napaulat na pag-alis at pagsira sa corals sa WPS sa posibleng reclamation project sa nasabing lugar.
Samantala, naniniwala naman si Maritime law expert Jay Batongbacal na ang mga kinukuhang corals mula sa bahagi ng WPS ay ginagamit ng Tsina bilang materyal para sa dekorasyon, ornaments, at alahas.
Sinabi ng Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Command (AFP-WesCom) na may mga kaso ng massive coral harvesting sa kahabaan ng Rozul (Iroquois) Reef na nasa loob ng exclusive economic zone (EEZ) ng Pilipinas.
“‘Yung habol nila ‘yung mga giant clams sa ilalim ng reef. Pangalawa ‘yung mismong coral, kinukuha din nila at ‘yung mga species doon,” ayon kay Batongbacal sa Kapihan forum.
“Lahat po ‘yan ginagamit nilang material panggawa ng dekorasyon. Pinangpapalit nila sa ivory, ginagawa nilang mga estatwa, mga palamuti. Tapos ‘yung mga coral, ginagawa nilang jewelry at kung ano ano pang mga bagay,” dagdag na wika nito.
Ipinaliwanag ni Batongbacal, isa ring director ng University of the Philippines (UP) Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, na ang pag-ani ng corals ay maaaring makaapekto sa kapaligiran, at maging sa food security ng bansa.
“‘Yung habitat ng fisheries nawawala so nababawasan ‘yung kakayahan ng mga pangisdaaan na magpatuloy na mag-regenerate. Taon taon, bale parang nababawasan ang kanilang capability para ma-maintain ‘yung populations nila,” ani Batongbacal.
Bilang reaskyon naman sa umano’y pag-ani ng China ng coral mula sa West Philippine Sea, sinabi ni Japan’s Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuhiko Koshikawa sa kanyang X account na ang pinakabagong development ay “very alarming news.”
“Our oceans are the lifeblood of our planet, & coral reefs are its colorful heartbeats. Let’s preserve & protect these vital ecosystems for generations to come,” ayon kay Koshikawa.
Ang naging tugon naman ng Chinese Embassy Manila sa Twitter account sa tweet ng Japanese envoy ay, “People should be alarmed by the spreading of such disinformation. Oceans are indeed the lifeblood of our planet. So stop the release of contaminated nuclear water from Fukushima.” Kris Jose
