VATICAN – Sinupalpal ni Pope Francis nitong Sabado, Agosto 26 ang “disinformation” at fake news na kumakalat umano at nakakaapekto na sa opinyon ng publiko, bilang isang principal offense ng journalism.
“Disinformation is the first of the sins, the mistakes — let’s say — of journalism,” sinabi ni Pope Francis sa Italian journalists na nagtipon-tipon para sa isang journalism prize sa Vatican.
Kilala ang Santo Papa bilang isang “savvy communication”, kung saan binalikan niya ang listahan ng tinatawag niyang “sins” sa media.
“Disinformation, when journalism does not inform or informs badly; slander (sometimes this is used); defamation, which is different from slander but destroys; and the fourth is… the love of scandal.”
“I am concerned, for example, about the manipulations of those who interestingly propagate fake news to steer public opinion,” sinabi pa niya, at hinimok ang “reawakening of responsibility” partikular na sa nagpapatuloy na giyera sa Ukraine.
“My hope is that space will be given to the voices of peace, to those who are committed to putting an end to this as to so many other conflicts,” sinabi pa ng Papa.
Mula nang maluklok bilang Santo Papa, kilala si Pope Francis na madalas makipag-ugnayan sa media, at nagsasagawa ng mga interview, malayo sa sinundan niyang si Benedict XVI.
