MANILA, Philippines – Naghain ng resolusyon si Senator Risa Hontiveros na ipinadedeklara ang Hulyo 12 ng bawat taon bilang National West Philippine Sea (WPS) Day na gumugunita sa tagumpay ng bansa sa Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA).
“Considering the unresolved territorial dispute between the Philippines and China, and the presence of Chinese vessels in Panatag shoal and other parts of the WPS, which continue to threaten and harass Filipino fisher-folk and prevent them from exercising their traditional fishing rights in the area, it is essential that the spirit of the country’s landmark legal victory in the Hague be kept alive in the hearts of our people through a special day of remembrance, and other related activities,” pahayag ni Hontiveros sa proposed Senate Resolution 674.
Inihain ni Hontiveros ang resolusyon na ito kasabay ng ika-pitong anibersaryo ng PCA ruling na kinakatigan ang Pilipinas sa exclusive economic zone nito at nagbabasura sa nine-dash line ng China.
Noong Hulyo 12, 2016, inilabas ng Hague-based PCA ang 501-page ruling sa naturang lawsuit na nagdedeklarang ang historical claim ng China sa halos buong South China Sea ay illegal sa ilalim ng United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Sa kabilang banda, ang arbitral tribunal ay walang enforcement power.
Tumanggi naman ang China na kilalanin ang desisyong ito at patuloy na ipinagpipilitan ang soberanya nito sa WPS. RNT/JGC
