MANILA, Philippines- Umapela si Kabataan Partylist Rep. Raoul Manuel kay Pangulong Bongbong Marcos na magdeklara ng Mental Health Emergency kasunod na rin ng tumataas na kaso ng student suicide sa bansa.
Nagpahayag ng pagkaalarma si Manuel kasunud ng ibinigay na report ng Department of Education (DepEd) sa pagdinig ng Senate Committee on Basic Education na nasa 404 youth students sa buong bansa ang nasawi dahil sa suicide at nasa 2,147 ang kaso ng attempted suicide sa loob lamang ng Academic Year 2021-2022.
“Crunching the data, there had been more than one student who fell victim to suicide per day while roughly one student attempted to commit suicide every four hours in the past academic year. These are numbers we have never seen before,” pahayag ni Manuel.
Sinabi ni Manuel na hindi lamang ang insidente ng suicide sa mga estudyante ang nakakabahala kundi maging ang naging rebelasyon ng DepEd na ang ratio para sa Mental Health Professionals sa estudyante ay nasa 1:13,400, ani Manuel, lubhang malayio ito sa ideal ratio na 1:500.
“In light of this, we urge authorities to declare a mental health emergency to give way for immediate and substantial government action to ramp up budget and support for mental health professionals and services. It’s also best for Congress to exercise its oversight powers to check the implementation of the Mental Health Law so we can better address shortcomings,” paliwanag ni Manuel.
“Higit sa pagtugon sa mental health services, di natin maitatanggi na epekto rin ito ng higit dalawang taong pagsara ng mga paaralan at ang distance o hybrid learning modality na dumoble sa load at gastusin ng mga estudyante. In this regard, we also need a serious review and overhaul of education policies especially the K-12 while we ensure 100% face-to-face classes,” giit pa ng mambabatas.
Nakatakdang maghain ng House Resolution si Manuel sa House of Representatives ukol sa isinisulong nitong pagdedeklara ng mental health emergency.
Nakapaloob sa ihahaing resolusyon ang kahilingan nito na imbestigahan ang tumataas na kaso ng suicide at kung paano ito masosolusyunan gayundin ang pagtiyak na naipatutupad ng maayos ang DepEd MATATAG Education Agenda na nagtatakda na dapat mayroong mental health services sa bawat paaralan.
