MANILA, Philippines – Palaisipan sa mga astronomer ang pagkawala ng ulap sa Neptune.
Noong mga nakaraang taon kasi, ang Neptune ay nababalutan ng malaking cirrus-like clouds na ngayon ay matatagpuan na lamang sa south pole ng planeta.
Batay sa analysis sa mga kuha sa Neptune ng tatlong malalaking space telescopes, natukoy ng mga siyentipiko na ang pagkawala ng mga ulap sa Neptune ay posibleng indikasyon ng solar cycle.
“These remarkable data give us the strongest evidence yet that Neptune’s cloud cover correlates with the Sun’s cycle,” pahayag ni senior study author Imke de Pater, professor emeritus ng astronomy sa University of California, Berkeley.
“Our findings support the theory that the Sun’s (ultraviolet) rays, when strong enough, may be triggering a photochemical reaction that produces Neptune’s clouds.”
Sa datos mula sa Hubble Space Telescope, W.M. Keck Observatory sa Hawaii at Lick Observatory in California, nakita ng mga eksperto ang 2.5 cycles ng cloud activity sa 29-year period ng obserbasyon sa Neptune, kung saan ang liwanag ng planeta ay tumaas noong 2022 at muling dumilim noong 2007.
Muli itong nagliwanag noong 2015 bago muling dumilim noong 2020.
“Even now, four years later, the most recent images we took this past June still show the clouds haven’t returned to their former levels,” saad sa pahayag ng lead author ng pag-aaral na si Erandi Chavez, doctoral student sa Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian.
Ani Chavez, ang naturang findings ay “extremely exciting and unexpected, especially since Neptune’s previous period of low cloud activity was not nearly as dramatic and prolonged.” RNT/JGC
