MANILA, Philippines – NAGSASAGAWA na ngayon ng sarili nitong imbestigasyon ang Commission on Human Rights (CHR) hinggil sa napaulat na harassment sa tatlong journalists na nagko-cover sa land dispute sa bayan ng Pastrana, Leyte noong Hulyo 14.
“CHR-Regional Office VIII is closely monitoring the development of this case simultaneous with the conduct of a parallel probe,” ayon sa kalatas ng komisyon.
Isang video ang pinost ng National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) na nagpapakita na may isang babaeng police officer ang agresibong itinulak ang isa sa mga reporters ng San Juanico TV.
Maririnig din ang mga putok ng baril sa footage.
Sinabi ng NUJP na kinakapanayam ng mga mamamahayag ang mga magsasaka sa lugar.
Isang araw matapos ito, sinabi ng Leyte Police Provincial Office na may mag-asawang pulis ang sangkot sa insidente, ito’y sina police staff sergeants Rhea May Baleos at Ver Baleos –ang mga ito’y ni-relieved sa kanilang tungkulin at ni-reassigned sa provincial headquarters.
“Acts of aggression and harassment against media impede the exercise of press freedom, which includes the right to gather and disseminate information without interference,” ayon sa CHR.
Pinaalalahanan naman ng CHR ang mga pulis na sumunod sa operational procedures, nagbibigay ng mga alituntunin sa kanilang performance para pigilan ang anumang uri ng pang-aabuso sa kapangyarihan.
“Members of the press must be able to carry out their work without intimidation and threats,” ayon sa CHR sabay sabing “Lack of media safety hinders the ability of the press to hold power to account and to disseminate important information, which contribute to the erosion of a democratic society.” Kris Jose
