MANILA, Philippines – Pinuri ni dating agriculture secretary Emmanuel Piñol ang desisyon ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na italaga si Francisco Tiu-Laurel Jr. bilang kalihim ng Department of Agriculture.
Aniya, ang pagkakatalaga kay Tiu-Laurel ay “breath of fresh air” para sa ahensya.
Si Piñol, na nanguna sa DA sa ilalim ng administrasyong Duterte, ay nagsabing si Laurel ay “a stakeholder representing the fisheries sector,” bilang pangulo ng Frabelle Fishing Corporation.
“Good choice… His appointment is a major breakthrough for the fisheries sector which had long been neglected,” sinabi ni Piñol sa social media post nitong Biyernes.
Dagdag pa niya, si Laurel umano ay walang dinadalang “political baggage since he does not owe his appointment to any political patron as he was personally picked by the President.”
Inilarawan ni Piñol sa Laurel bilang “a practitioner of the philosophy that agriculture is not just producing but it also involves processing and marketing,” at umaasa na ang framework ng complete value chain ang gagabay sa polisiya at aksyon ng ahensya.
Idinagdag din ni Piñol na sa pagkakatalaga kay Laurel bilang agriculture chief, ay umaasa itong mabubuksan na ang Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) sa iba’t ibang production areas sa bansa “to buy direct from farmers and fishermen to be sold in food outlets in the population centers.”
Ipinaliwanag din niya na kailangang tukuyin ang mga probinsya na naglalabas ng food commodities sa kanilang local requirements upang ang excess production ay madala sa mga lugar na nakararanas ng kakulangan ng suplay, na masosolusyunan umano ng FTI.
Ani Piñol, posibleng mapababa rin ang presyo ng mga pangunahing produkto kung bibilhin ang mga ito nang direkta sa mga magsasaka na walang middleman o traders.
“At the same time, farmers will be inspired to produce more as they already have direct link with the market, they are assured that their harvest would not be spoiled,” sinabi pa ng dating opisyal.
“With FTI, farmers may be contracted to produce more chicken, fruits, vegetables, while FTI will sell these products to areas where these are most needed,” dagdag pa nito. RNT/JGC
