MANILA, Philippines – MAGTUTULUNGAN ang European Union at Pilipinas sa pagtatakda ng “right conditions” para sa free trade agreement.
Nagkaroon kasi ng bilateral meeting si European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sa Palasyo ng Malakanyang, araw ng Lunes, Hulyo 31.
Sinabi ni Von der Leyen na ang EU ay pang-apat na “largest trading partner” ng Pilipinas.
Idagdag pa na ang dalawang partido ay “can do so much more” pagdating sa kalakalan.
“So I’m very glad that we have decided to relaunch negotiations for free trade agreement,” ayon kay von der Leyen sa joint press statement kasama si Pangulong Marcos sa harap ng mga opisyal ng pamahalaan sa Palasyo ng Malakanyang.
“Our teams will get to work right now on setting the right conditions so that we can get back to the negotiations. A free trade agreement has huge potential for both of us in terms of growth and in terms of jobs,” dagdag na wika nito.
Ang pagpapatuloy ng pag-uusap ukol sa free trade agreement sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at EU ay target na simulan bago matapos ang taon.
Nagsimula noong 2013 ang exploratory FTA talks sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at EU began in 2013, habang inanunsyo naman ang negosasyon noong Disyembre 2015.
Ang unang FTA negotiations ay idinaos sa Brussels, Belgium noong 2016, sinundan ng second round negotiations sa Cebu, Philippines noong 2017.
Simula noon, natigil na ang FTA talks.
Sa joint press statement, sinabi ni von der Leyen na ang FTA ay maaaring “springboard for a new technology cooperation to modernize the broader economy.”
“The cost of economic dependencies, we need to diversify our supply lines and make them resilient. This is a lesson we have learned and that is what we call ‘derisking’ our trade relations,” ayon kay von der Leyen.
Maliban sa kalakalan, pinag-usapan din nina Pangulong Marcos at von der Leyen ang climate change sa bilateral meeting.
Tinuran pa ni Von der Leyen na matagal ng sinusuportahan ng EU ang laban ng Pilipinas sa climate change at extreme weather events.
“We’re currently setting up a so-called Copernicus data mirror site within the Philippine space agency. And we have just signed an agreement to boost the flow of Earth observation data,” ayon kay von der Leyen.
“Between us, this is very important for early warning, for example, for extreme weather phenomenon and to improve the climate resilience. This is a first in-space cooperation in Asia,” dagdag na pahayag nito. Kris Jose
