LIBYA – Pumalo na sa mahigit 11,000 ang death toll sa mapaminsalang pagbaha sa eastern coastal city ng Libya na Derna.
Ayon pa sa UN report, nasa 170 katao ang nasawi sa labas ng Derna dahil pa rin sa pagbaha.
Sa lungsod lamang ng Derna, nasa 10,100 katao pa ang nananatiling nawawala.
“These figures are expected to rise as search-and-rescue crews work tirelessly to find survivors,” dagdag ng United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Mahigit 40,000 katao naman ang nawalan ng tirahan sa northeastern Libya dahil sa malalakas na pag-ulan dulot ng bagyong Daniel.
Ang epicenter ng kalamidad na Derna, ay tila nahati sa dalawa nang rumagasa ang tubig sa buong bayan.
“With thousands of displaced people now on the move, the risk of exposure to landmines and Explosive Ordnance of War (ERW) leftover from years of conflict is on the rise, as flood waters have now shifted landmines and ERW,” sinabi ng OCHA.
Nagpapatuloy ang paggalugad ng mga rescuers sa mga gumuhong gusali upang mahanap pa ang ibang mga bangkay.
“Bodies are severely decomposing and at one point retrieving them might not be possible,” pahayag ng representative mula sa Tunisian mission sa meeting kasama ang counterparts mula Russia, Arab countries, Turkey at Italy.
“We need assistance so our intervention is more efficient,” dagdag pa ng representative. RNT/JGC
