MANILA, Philippines – Pinakawalan na sa kalawakan mula sa International Space Station (ISS) ang locally developed cube satellites na Maya-5, at Maya-6.
Sa anunsyo ng Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), ang “Kibo” o Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Small Satellite Orbital Deployer-26 CubeSat deployment mission ang nagpasilidad sa launch ng dalawang cube satellites noong Hulyo 19.
Matatandaan na noong Hunyo 5 ay inilipad ng SpaceX Dragon Falcon 9 ang CubeSats patungo sa ISS.
Ayon sa PhilSA, ang dalawang 1.3 kilogram 1U CubeSats ay makatutulong para magbigay ng datos na magagamit sa weather monitoring at iba pang emergency announcements.
Sa pahayag nitong Huwebes, Hulyo 20, ipinaliwanag ng mga scholar na nag-develop ng mga satellite kung bakit napakahalaga ng mga unang araw matapos ang deployment ng CubeSats.
“During the first 72 hours from release, we will be monitoring the health of the satellites in orbit. The hope is that within the first few passes, we will be able to receive their beacons, which will tell us significant information such as the status of antenna deployment and battery levels.”
“Once functionalities are tested, the data to be acquired during the satellites’ time in orbit will also shine light on scientific questions and can be analyzed for future satellite developments in the Philippines. This is possible because of the cooperation of many ground station operators around the world,” dagdag pa.
Ayon sa mga iskolar, natanggap nila ang “first beacon” mula sa Maya-5 at Maya-6 sa pamamagitan ng amateur radio satellite station sa University of the Philippines Diliman bandang 4:34 ng hapon nitong Miyerkules, na may tagal na 90 minuto makaraang pakawalan ang mga satellite sa kalawakan.
Ang susunod na hakbang ng grupo ay ang mahigpit na bantayan ang kaayusan ng CubeSats bilang paghahanda sa kani-kanilang misyon.
Ang mga iskolar na nasa likod ng Maya-5 at Maya-6 ay sina Joseph Jonathan Co, Anna Ruth Alvarez, Ronald Collamar, Angela Clarisse Chua, Chandler Timm Doloriel, Khazmir Camille Valerie Macaraeg, Genesis Remocaldo, at Gio Asher Tagabi.
Binuo ang Maya-5 at Maya-6 sa ilalim ng Space Science and Technology Proliferation through the University Partnerships (STeP-UP) project ng STAMINA4Space Program.
Pinondohan naman ng Department of Science and Technology (DOST) ang CubeSats project.
