MANILA, Philippines – Nais ng Pilipinas, sa pamamagitan ng Department of Transportation (DOTr) na magkaroon ng reelection sa International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council.
Sa speech na inihatid ni DOTr secretary Jaime Bautista at DOTr Undersecretary for Maritime Elmer Sarmiento, mas maraming maaabot ang Pilipinas sa maritime goals nito, at pagprotekta sa kapakanan ng mga Filipino seafarer bilang miyembro ng 40-member council.
“We believe our seat at the Council is rooted at our being the preferred choice of seafarers in the global crew manning market as well as being the fifth largest shipbuilding nation,” sinabi ni Sarmiento kasabay ng diplomatic reception nitong Martes, Setyembre 26.
Idinagdag niya na isasama ng bansa ang environmental protection sa isa sa mga commitments nito sa pamamagitan ng pakikipagtulungan sa iba pang international organizations.
“We pledge to remain a proactive member of the IMO at ensuring the safety of life and property at sea, sustainable shipping, and environmentally sound marine industry,” dagdag ni Sarmiento.
Ang IMO ay attached agency ng United Nations na nangangasiwa sa world maritime affairs, katulad ng kaligtasan, seguridad at environmental protection ng marine sphere.
Naging kalahok ang Pilipinas ng IMO noong 1964, at ibinoto sa Konseho noong 1997. RNT/JGC
