MANILA, Philippines – Pormal nang humiling ang Pilipinas sa United Nations (UN) na irehistro nito ang extended continental shelf (ECS) sa Western Palawan region sa West Philippine Sea, inanunsyo ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) nitong Sabado, Hunyo 15.
Ang pagpapasa ng impormasyon sa UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) ay ginawa sa pamamagitan ng Philippine Mission to the UN sa New York nitong Biyernes.
Ito ang ikalawang pagkakataon na nagrehistro ang Pilipinas ng ECS entitlement nito.
Noong 2012, kinilala ng CLCS ang partial submiision nito sa Philippine Rise, na nagdagdag ng 135,506 square kilometers ng seabed area para sa bansa.
Sa pahayag, sinabi ni DFA Assistant Secretary for Maritime and Ocean Affairs Marshall Louis Alferez na ang submission ay deklarasyon hindi lamang ng maritime entitlements ng Pilipinas sa ilalim ng UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) kundi maging sa commitment ng Manila para sa responsableng aplikasyon ng mga proseso nito.
Makatutulong ito na masiguro ang sovereign rights at maritime jurisdictions ng Pilipinas sa West Philippine Sea.
“Incidents in the waters tend to overshadow the importance of what lies beneath,” ani Alferez.
“The seabed and the subsoil extending from our archipelago up to the maximum extent allowed by UNCLOS hold significant potential resources that will benefit our nation and our people for generations to come. Today, we secure our future by making a manifestation of our exclusive right to explore and exploit natural resources in our ECS entitlement.”
Samantala, nilinaw ni Alferez na ang submission ay hindi bumabali sa usapin sa relevant coastal States na mayroong lehitimong ECS claims na sinusukat mula sa kanilang ‘respective lawful baselines’ sa ilalim ng UNCLOS.
“We consider our submission as a step in discussing delimitation matters and other forms of cooperation moving forward. What is important is the Philippines puts on record the maximum extent of our entitlement,” aniya. RNT/JGC
