MANILA, Philippines – KAABANG-ABANG ang gagawing paglulunsad ng Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corporation (PMFTC) ng susunod na antas ng “heated tobacco technology” na naglalayong alisin ang cigarette smoking.
“Very soon in the Philippines,” ayon kay PMFTC, Inc. President Denis Gorkun.
Ani Gorkun, ang pagsasabatas ng Vape Law noong nakaraang taon ang nagbigay-daan para sa innovative products na pinatunayan ng mas maraming scientific evidence pagdating sa mas magandang alternatibo sa paninigarilyo na ipakikilala sa bansa at ialok sa mga smoker o naninigarilyo na ayaw bitawan ang opsyon na lumayo mula sa sigarilyo.
“PMFTC, the local affiliate of Philip Morris International, would launch “very soon” in the Philippines the next level in tobacco innovation called IQOS ILUMA, a more consumer-friendly device that uses induction technology to heat tobacco instead of burning it,” ayon kay Gorkun.
Winika pa ni Gorkun na ipakikilala rin ng PMFTC, ‘ very soon’ ang oral nicotine pouches na tinawag na ZYN.
Ang ZYN ay isang oral nicotine delivery product na ganap na smoke free. Gawa ng Swedish Match, isang kompanya na kamakailan lamang ay nakuha ng PMI. Ang ZYN ay itinuturing na “best-selling nicotine pouch” sa Estados Unidos ngayon.
Taong 2022, inilunsad ng PMFTC ang IQOS, “number one heated tobacco” sa buong mundo. Simula noon, may 75,000 Filipino smokers ang lumayo o tumigil mula sa pagtangkilik sa sigarilyo.
Sinabi ni Gorkun na layon ng PMI na alisin ang “cigarette consumption” alinsunod sa pananaw nito na magdeliver ng isang smoke-free future.
“We will continue to work towards our smoke-free future vision with products that are found by numerous international health authorities to be far better compared to continuing to smoke cigarettes,” ayon kay Gorkun.
Winika pa ni Gorkun na “ship has sailed” ukol sa debate hinggil sa smoke-free products at tinukoy ang maipagkakapuri na international public health agencies kabilang na ang Health Security Agency ng United Kingdoms (dating Public Health England), German Cancer Research Center, Netherlands National Institute for Public Health at Japan National Institute of Health na nagpahayag na ang “smoke-free alternatives” ay nakapagpo-produce ng 90-95% “less toxic chemicals.”
Gayunman, tinuran pa ni Gorkun na totoong may isang bilyong katao sa buong mundo ang patuloy na naninigarilyo sa kabila ng pagiging “fully aware” sa negatibong health consequences.
Sinabi pa nito na ang pagpapasa sa Vape Law, isang taon na ang nakalilipas ay maituturing na isang “tagumpay” para sa public health at ang “young” legislation ang nagbukas ng pintuan para sa hinaharap na science-based innovative products na mas magandang alternatibo sa sigarilyo.
Isa sa may-akda ng Vape Law o Republic Act 119000, dating Congresswoman Sharon Garin, ngayon ay undersecretary ng Department of Energy, ang nagpahayag na ang batas ay nakatanggap ng “so much admiration from other countries,” nang siya ay imbitahan para magsalita sa Global Forum on Nicotine sa Warsaw, Poland nito lamang unang bahagi ng taon.
Binigyang-diin ni Garin na kung walang regulasyon, hindi nangangahulugan na ang produkto ay ipinagbabawal.
“It’s free-for-all and you don’t regulate, then anybody can buy it.”
“As a previous representative and author, I do believe that this law was passed at the right time with the right formula. What we want is a less harmful alternative but also at the same time we didn’t want minors to pick it up,” aniya pa rin.
Dagdag na wika pa nito na “We have passed a law that’s quite progressive,” noting that the Vape Law is “more forward-looking because it included the powers to regulate those who are selling online.”
Samantala, tinuran pa ni Garin na na nakasaad sa R.A. 11900 na ang vaping ay hindi ginawa para “cool to the kids. We don’t want non-smokers to pick up the habit of vaporized or electronic cigarettes. What we want is a less harmful alternative for current smokers.”
Samantala, umaasa naman ang dating kongresista na “with the coordination between Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Health and including Department of Finance with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, I think we can hopefully see a smoke-free country or even at the minimum we have a healthier and more productive community.” RNT
