Dr Saia Ma’u Piukala, proposed by Tonga, has been nominated as the next WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific. Member States voted to nominate Dr Piukala during the 74th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific. Dr Piukala’s nomination will be submitted to WHO's Executive Board for appointment as the new Regional Director, and he will take office on 1 February 2024 for an initial term of 5 years. MANILA, Philippines- Nominado si Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, health minister ng Tonga, bilang sunod na Regional Directorng World Health Organization’s Western Pacific region.
Binoto ng member states si Piukala sa 74th session ng WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific nitong Martes ng hapon.
Ayon sa press briefer na inilabas ng WHO, si Piukala ay miyembro ng Parliament and Minister of Health sa Kingdom of Tonga. Dati siyang Chair of the Parliament Standing Committee on Population and Development.
Bago pumasok sa politika noong 2014, isa siyang general surgeon at medical superintendent ng Vaiola Hospital, Ministry of Health sa Tonga.
“I will be the regional director for everyone,” ani Piukala.
Bumoto ang 30 member states sa secret ballot nitong Martes. Limang kandidato mula sa China, Pilipinas, Solomon Islands, Tonga at Vietnam ang tumatakbo para sa pwesto.
Si Piukala ang may pinakamatinding interes sa population and development matters, partikular sa may kinalaman sa mga kabataan at kalusugan. Mayroon siyang partikular na interes sa non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Kabilang din sa mga tinututukan niya ang Universal Health Coverage at Emerging Infectious Diseases. Pinangunahan niya ang Sustainable Development Goals para sa Tonga.
Dati siyang miyembro ng Executive Board for the World Health Organization noong 2019 at 2022, at itinalagang isa sa Commissioners for the High-Level Commission on NCDs para sa WHO noong 2018-2020.
Isusumite ang nominasyon ni Piukala sa WHO’s Executive Board for appointment bilang bagong Regional Director, at opisyal na manunungkulan sa February 1, 2024 para sa initial term na limang taon.
Ang nominasyon ni Piukala ay pitong buwan makalipas ang pagsibak ng WHO kay dating regional director Takeshi Kasai kasunod ng akusasyon ng mga tauhan ng racist, abusive at authoritarian behavior.
Inakusahan si Kasai, na itinanggi ang mga akusasyon, ng pamumuno sa isang “toxic atmosphere” sa WHO’s Western Pacific headquarters na may kultura ng “systemic bullying and public ridiculing”.
Sinabi pa siya ng staff, na hiniling na huwag pangalanan “for fear of retaliation”, ng pagsasabi ng “derogatory remarks to staff of certain nationalities”, partikular sa mga Pilipino.
Gayundin, hindi umano naging maayos ang pagtugon nito sa COVID pandemic, at iabusao ang kanyang kapangyarihan para muling mahalala. RNT/SA
