MANILA, Philippines- Lantarang kinontra ni Senador Francis “Chiz” Escudero ang panawagan ni Senador Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian na tuluyan nang ipagbawal ang operasyon ng Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) dahil kailangan magkaroon ng panibagong buwis kapalit ng mawawalang kita sa naturang industriya.
Nais ni Gatchalian na tuluyan nang ipagbawal ang POGO sa bansa dahil nasasangkot ang karamihan sa miyembro nito sa iba’t ibang krimen tulad ng human trafficking at droga kabilang kidnapping at murder.
Ngunit para kay Escudero, magkakaroon ng negatibong epekto ng pagbabawal sa POGO sa kinikita ng pamahalaan na walang ibang alternatibo kundi maningil ng panibagong buwis kapalit nito.
“If we close them down, we may have to increase taxes because we need to cover the lost income from them. For this, I’d like to look at the big picture,” aniya.
“Look, some are bad, but that doesn’t mean all are bad. Some are bad but government is earning. PAGCOR’s income increased by several hundred percent due to POGO,” dagdag ni Escudero na tumutukoy sa Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.
Iniulat ng PAGCOR na tumaas sa 66.16% nitong 2022 ang kita sa POGO na nakapagtala ng mahigit P58.96 billion kumpara sa P35.48 billion noong 2021. Kumikita ang pamahlaan ng P55.05 bilyon sa gaming operations nito.
“I read in the news that PAGCOR has given all POGOs provisional licenses pending review, and that at the end of the review, will know how many will be allowed to operate. This is a good first step of PAGCOR to give temporary licenses pending a review of all as well,” ayon kay Escudero.
“The review of POGO is a good start but [PAGCOR] should coordinate with law-enforcement agencies, not to clear with them but of course so that it knows what’s going on to those it issued licenses,” dagdag niya.
Sa ilalim ng charter, inaatasan ang PAGCOR na pamahalaan ang gaming industry, kumita para sa socio-civic at national development programs, at tumuong sa tourism industry.
