HANOI- Inihayag ng Vietnam nitong Biyernes na makikipag-usap ito sa Pilipinas hinggil sa pagsusulong ng mga panukalang nakahanay sa interes ng dalawang bansa, sa paghirit ng Manila noong nakaraang linggo sa UN ng pagpapalawig ng continental shelf sa South China Sea.
“Vietnam once again affirms its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos in accordance with international law,” pahayag ni foreign ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang na naka-post sa government website, tinutukoy ang Paracel at Spratly Islands.
“Coastal states, when submitting their outer continental shelf boundaries, need to respect the legitimate rights and interests of other relevant coastal states with opposite or adjacent coastlines,” ani Hang.
Kabilang ang Vietnam at ang Pilipinas sa claimants sa ilang bahagi ng South China Sea, na inaangkin ng China.
Naghain ang Pilipinas noong nakaraang linggo ng claim sa UN na palawigin ang continental shelf sa South China Sea, kung saan $3 trilyong halaga ng kalakal ang dumaraan kada taon, at pinaniniwalaang mayaman sa langis at sa natural gas deposits, maging sa isda.
Sinabi ng Foreign Affairs Department ng Pilipinas na ang bansa, sa pamamagitan ng Philippine Mission to the UN sa New York, noong Hunyo 14 “submitted information to the United Nations (UN) Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) to register the country’s entitlement to an extended continental shelf (ECS) in the West Palawan Region in the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea..”
Binanggit ang Article 76 ng UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), sinabi ng Manila “a coastal State such as the Philippines is entitled to establish the outer limits of its continental shelf comprising the seabed and subsoil of the submarine areas extending beyond 200 nautical miles (NM) but not to exceed 350 NM from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured.”
