MANILA, Philippines – Kinumpirma ng Bureau of Immigration (BI) nitong Sabado, Setyembre 6 na ipinag-utos ng Taguig City court ang pagpapalaya kay nickel businessman Joseph Sy at umaapela na sila sa naging desisyon.
Sa pahayag, sinabi ni BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado na natanggap ng ahensya ang kautusan mula sa Taguig Regional Trial Court Branch 271 na may petsang Setyembre 4, 2025 na pinirmahan ni Presiding Judge Paz Esperanza Cortes, kaugnay sa deportation case ni Sy, na pininiwalaan ng BI na si Chen Zhong Zhen, isang Chinese citizen.
“The said order grants the petition for habeas corpus filed by Chen’s camp and orders his release from the BI’s custody, citing lack of jurisdiction,” ani Viado.
“The BI respects the decision of the court but maintains that there is strong evidence against Chen, supported by BI biometric records,” dagdag pa.
Sinabi ni Viado na ipinasa na ng BI ang apela nito sa Court of Appeals at naghihintay ng resolusyon nito.
“We trust that the courts will continue to review and resolve this case with utmost diligence and integrity, to ensure the protection of national security and the rule of law,” dagdag pa.
Noong Agosto 21, si Sy ay dinala sa kustodiya ng BI matapos na mapag-alamang ang biometric information nito ay tugma sa isang Chinese citizen.
Bago ang pag-aresto, nakatanggap ang BI ng impormasyon mula sa government intelligence sources na illegal na nakakuha si Sy ng
Philippine identity documents.
Humiling naman ang kompanya ng negosyante sa pagpapalaya rito at sinabing si Sy ay nagmamay-ari ng isang valid Philippine passport.
Noong Agosto 26, nabahala naman si Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros sa enlistment ni Sy sa Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Ani Hontiveros, ang pagpapanggap ni Sy bilang isang Filipino ay katulad ng kaso ni Alice Guo na dating alkalde ng Bamban, Tarlac, at ngayon ay nahaharap sa kabi-kabilang kaso sa kanyang kaugnayan sa illegal POGO hub at nasyonalidad.
Kasunod nito ay inalis ng PCG si Sy mula sa auxiliary unit para sa misrepresentation ng citizenship nito. RNT/JGC
