MANILA, Philippines – Naghain nitong Sabado ng resolusyon si Laguna Representative at House Committee on Women and Gender Equality (CWGE) Chair Rene Ann Matibag upang tingnan ang pagpapatupad ng Safe Spaces Act sa mga lokal na pamahalaan kasunod ng akusasyon na sekswal na hinarass ng isang konsehal ng Maynila ang kanyang kapwa konsehal.
“The investigation is not just about the case. It’s about sending a clear message that sexual harassment, whether on the streets, online, or in the halls of power, will never be tolerated,” saad ni Matibag.
“Every office from the barangay hall to the city council to Congress itself, must be a safe, respectful, and gender-sensitive space. Under the Safe Spaces Act, all government offices are mandated to adopt and enforce measures to prevent gender-based sexual harassment,” dagdag niya.
Nagbabala rin si Matibag na ang mga opisyal na mabibigo sa pagpapatupad ng batas na ito ay maaring mabigyan ng parusang administratibo.
Bukod dito, kinondena ni Matibag ang sexual harassment, lalo na sa gobyerno, na nananawagan para sa pagpapatupad ng Safe Spaces Act at Code of Conduct for Public Officials and Employees sa mga lokal na pamahalaan at legislative bodies.
Pinuri rin niya si Castro sa pagsasalita, na nagsasabing, “coming forward in such circumstances is never easy, and it takes great strength to stand for one’s dignity and truth.”
Si Manila Councilor Eunice Castro, sa isang privilege speech nitong Huwebes, ay nagsabi na ang kanyang kapwa konsehal na si Ryan Ponce, ay hina-harass siya sa pamamagitan ng mga text message at pinakiusapan pa si Castro na ihayag pa, na tumutukoy sa kanyang pananamit sa isang sesyon ng konseho.
Sa parehong sesyon, humingi ng paumanhin si Ponce: “I stand here not to defend myself. I stand here to wholeheartedly, humbly apologize for what I did, for what I said.” RNT/MND
