FOR advancing environmental protection and implementing restoration programs, the Navotas City government under the stewardship of Mayor John Rey Tiangco has obtained another recognition, this time from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–National Capital Region which conferred it with the Green Legacy Award.

Gratified by the latest feat, the mayor cited the importance of shared responsibility in environmental protection.

“We are grateful to DENR–NCR for honoring Navotas as a Green Legacy Award inductee. This recognition highlights the collective efforts of our city government and our communities in protecting the environment, particularly in coastal and urban management and solid waste initiatives.”

The Green Legacy Awards is an annual recognition given to institutions, communities, and sectors that have proven to be strong partners of DENR-NCR in promoting environmental care, management, and restoration of natural resources across Metro Manila.

DENR-NCR recognized the city’s Environment and Natural Resources Office as one of the inductees of the Green Legacy Awards for its ongoing contributions and collaboration in implementing environmental programs, particularly in coastal and urban environmental management, solid waste management, and community engagement.

“We continue to urge all Navoteños to support the efforts by practicing proper waste segregation and disposing of waste at the proper time,” the city chief executive said.

The local government said it’s been strengthening its environmental initiatives through regular coastal clean-up activities and community-based environmental programs.

Among its key projects is the establishment of the Greenhouse and the Materials Recovery Facility in Barangay Tanza 2, which supports proper waste segregation, recycling, and sustainable waste management, it added.

BRING THEM IN COURT

While he’s aware that cases were already filed against some concerned Department of Public Works and Highway officials as well as private contractors led by couple Curlee and Sarah Discaya, Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco said he hopes to see those “brains” properly charged in court.

“But I acknowledge that the concerned law enforcement agencies are doing their best to go after those involved in this flood control scam.”

The veteran legislator was the one who revealed alleged irregularities particularly the illegal insertions at the national budget as well as anomalous flood control projects that involved Zaldy Co, who was then-chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations.

He said Co couldn’t do it alone without the blessing of then House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
