MANILA, Philippines – Sinabi ng House prosecution panel spokesperson na si Zia Alonto Adiong na ang impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte ay magiging mahalagang “litmus test” ng demokrasya at ng mga mekanismo ng constitutional accountability sa bansa.
Ayon kay Adiong, ang proseso ay magsisilbing patunay kung kayang tumayo ng mga institusyon ng bansa sa gitna ng political pressure at tensyon.
“This is actually a litmus test for us that we can say this democracy still works,” ani Adiong.
Dagdag niya, “And this is the perfect and democratic venue for both sides to air their complaints.”
Si Duterte ay nahaharap sa mga paratang na misuse of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, at pagbabanta laban kay Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Giit ni Adiong, mahalagang makita kung matatag ang Saligang Batas sa harap ng umano’y political pressure at intimidation.
“What we are talking about here is how strong our Constitution is, how it withstands political pressure, how it withstands scare tactics employed by different sectors in our society,” aniya.
Dagdag pa niya, dapat bigyan ng sapat na panahon ang impeachment process para maipresenta ng magkabilang panig ang ebidensya at mga testigo sa Senate impeachment court.
Iginiit din ng mambabatas na malaki ang interes ng publiko sa kaso, kabilang na ang mga tagasuporta ng bise presidente, na nais ding makita ang mga ebidensya sa paglilitis.
“As was said earlier by our expert here, even the supporters of the vice president want to see the evidence,” aniya.
“So it only means that the entire nation is truly invested in this,” dagdag niya. RNT/MND
