MANILA, Philippines – Umaasa ang mga biktima ng madugong war on drugs na mabilis nang uusad ang kaso laban kay dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa International Criminal Court (ICC), ayon kay ICC assistant to counsel Kristina Conti.
“Positive. They feel very positive (about) the consistent position of the court that the trial should start by November 30,” sinabi ni Conti.
“There have been additional status conference hearings. For us, that means the court wants to closely monitor the proceedings,” dagdag niya.
Inirerepresenta ni Conti ang mga pamilya ng extrajudicial killing (EJK) victims sa paglilitis ng ICC laban kay Duterte na kasalukuyang naka-detain sa ICC detention facility sa Scheveningen, The Hague, sa Netherlands.
Kasabay ng status conference noong Hunyo 23, inatasan ng ICC trial chamber si Duterte na humarap sa susunod na status conference sa Setyembre 7.
Humiling naman ang ICC prosecution sa Trial Chamber III na palawigin ang deadline ng paghahain ng mga obserbasyon ng mga eksperto kaugnay naman sa fitness to stand trial ni Duterte.
Samantala, sinabi ni Conti na isa sa mga pagsubok na kanilang hinaharap ngayon ay ang pag-abot sa mas marami pang biktima na lumahok sa paglilitis.
“As of now, one of our challenges is registering additional victims so they can be admitted and participate in the court proceedings. They need to go through an application and admission process, so we are still reaching out to other victims,” sinabi ni Conti. RNT/JGC
