MANILA, Philippines – Hiniling ng minority bloc na pinamumunuan ni Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano sa Supreme Court (SC) na pagdesisyunan pa rin ang kanilang petisyon na ipawalang-bisa ang sesyon ng Senado noong Hunyo 3 na nagresulta sa pagpapalit ng liderato ng kapulungan.
Sa 15-pahinang mosyon na may petsang Hunyo 29, sinabi ng mga petitioner na hindi naging moot ang kanilang kaso sa kabila ng special session noong Hunyo 17. Iginiit din nila na ideklarang walang bisa ang sesyon noong Hunyo 3 dahil umano sa kawalan ng kinakailangang quorum na itinatadhana ng Konstitusyon.
“If these issues are not resolved at the earliest opportunity before the impeachment trial commences on July 6, 2026, the impact on the institutional integrity and practical workings of the Senate of the Philippines, both as the upper chamber of the Congress of the Philippines and as the impeachment court, is far-reaching,” ayon sa grupo.
Nabasag ang tatlong araw na legislative deadlock noong Hunyo 3 matapos ang biglaang pagdalo ni Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, na nagbigay-daan sa pagbuo ng bagong mayorya at sa pagkahalal kay Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian bilang Senate President Pro Tempore at kalaunan bilang acting Senate President.
Noong Hunyo 17, nakumpleto ang kinakailangang 13 senador para sa quorum at pormal na nahalal si Gatchalian bilang Senate President.
Ayon sa grupo ni Cayetano, ang pagkakahalal kay Gatchalian noong Hunyo 17 ay “neither erases nor retroactively cures the constitutional infirmities that have attended the rump session on June 3, 2026.”
“Ultimately, this case is not about who controls the Senate. Rather, it is about safeguarding the constitutional order from which all public authority derives and reaffirming to the Filipino people that no branch of government, however powerful or politically situated, is above the Constitution,” dagdag ng grupo.
