MANILA, Philippines – Kapuwa sinang-ayunan nina Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at US Secretary of State Marco Rubio na mas patatagin at palakasin ang Philippines-US collaboration sa iba’t ibang aspeto ng mutual interest para epektibong matugunan ang kasalukuyan at umuusbong ng mga hamon.
Mainit na tinanggap ni Pangulong Marcos si Rubio Sa Palasyo ng Malakanyang para sa courtesy call ng huli.
Si Rubio ay nasa Maynila para magpartisipa sa Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers Meetings and Related Meetings.
“I’m glad that you have had this opportunity to at least engage and have some exchanges with the other foreign secretaries, with other foreign ministers, especially coming out of ASEAN,” ang sinabi ni Pangulong Marcos sa pagtanggap kay Rubio.
“I’m very glad, as I mentioned to you, we watch the news and we are surprised that you are still able to find time to visit with us,” aniya pa rin.
Kabilang sa mga usapin na binanggit ng Pangulo bilang areas of cooperation ay ang pinagsamang pagsisikap para tugunan ang epekto ng labanan sa Gitnang Silangan, bago at umuusbong na mga teknolohiya gaya ng intelligence (AI), defense and security, at maging ang economic cooperation.
Ayon sa Pangulo, “the Philippines and the US can also build further based on the longstanding relations between them, particularly in addressing various issues such as peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, trade and business cooperation, and disaster response.”
Para naman kay Rubio, pinasalamatan nito si Pangulong Marcos sa pagtanggap sa kanya. Binati rin niya ang Pangulo para sa paggawa ng isang mahusay na trabaho sa pag-host ng 2026 ASEAN Summit, na , bilang karagdagan ay naging mahalaga sa rehiyon, at nakapagbigay ng oportunidad para sa mas malawak na interaksyon sa hanay ng mga bansa.
Ito ang kauna-unahang pagbisita ni Rubio sa Pilipinas bilang U.S. Secretary of State.
“This is a country that has deep ties to the United States for many, many years. And it’s a partnership that is only growing. And in light of recent events, I think more important than ever,” ayon kay Rubio.
“And so we’re glad to be with you here today and to reaffirm that relationship and our commitment to the U.S.-Philippines relationship,” aniya pa rin.
Sa ulat, pormal na itinatag ng Pilipinas at Estados Unidos ang diplomatic relations noong Hulyo 4, 1946, tanda ng 80 taon ng diplomatic relations ngayong taon. Ito naman ang ‘oldest and only treaty ally’ ng Pilipinas.
Ang bilateral defense at security engagement ay nananatili namang napakahalagang haligi ng PH-U.S. bilateral relations at isinagawa sa loob ng balangkas ng Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), Visiting Forces Agreement (VEA), Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), at iba pang bilateral agreements.
“Regionally, the U.S. has been an ASEAN Dialogue Partner since 1977 and a Comprehensive Strategic Partner since 2022. In terms of trade, the U.S. is the Philippines’ third largest trading partner, top export market, and fifth largest import supplier as of 2025,” ayon sa ulat.
Ang Estados Unidos din ang major source ng Pilipinas pagdating sa Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) at Official Development Assistance (ODA).
Matatandaang taong 2025, ang net FDI mula sa Estados Unidos ay umabot sa US$183.99 million. Noong 2023, ito ang top source ng Pilipinas pagdating sa ODA grants, nagkakahalaga ng US$615.97 million. (KRIS JOSE)
