MANILA, Philippines – Nagkasundo ang lahat ng senator-judges na gawin sa hapon ang impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte at ilipat din sa umaga ang regular session ng Senado bilang lehislatura, ayon kay Senate President Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian.
Sa pahayag, sinabi ni Gatchalian na nagkasundo ang impeachment court na pagpalitin ang schedule ng impeachment trial sa regular session ng Senado upang mapabilis ang proseso upang magkaroon ng open-ended, marathon trial sa hapon.
Aniya sa interview, nagkasundo ang Senado na magakroon ng adjustment upang maiwasan na tumagal ang impeachment trial hanggang 2027 na halos malapit na sa election period.
“Although there is already a consensus, we will implement it within the week,” ayon kay Gatchalian saka binanggit na maaaring tumagal hanggang sa susunod na taon kung magpapatuloy ang kasalukuyang daloy ng paglilitis.
Sa ngayon, ginaganap ang impeachment trial sa umaga na nagsisimula ng alas diyes hanggang alas tres ng hapon saka isusunod ang regular session dakong alas kuwatro ng hapon.
Nalilimitahan sa ganitong set-up ang prosecution at defense team na suriin nang mabuti ang testigo at magbaltaktakan sa argumento.
Kamakailan, iminungkahi ni Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri na baliktarin ang set-up upang magkaroon ng mas mahabang paglilitis na magsisimula dakong alas tres ng hapon nang hindi nasasagasaan nag regular legislative calendar.
“One of the things we are discussing is reversing the schedule. On average, an impeachment trial takes six to seven hours. It is actually very long. And because it is held in the morning, it is limited because we have our session at 3 p.m.,” ani Gatchalian.
“So one of the things we are considering is switching the schedule so we can hold the trial in the afternoon again and make it longer,” giit ng lider ng Senado.
Aniya, pipilitin ng impeachment court na matapos ang paglilitis bago magtapos ang 2026.
“We will really get burned out. Our senators are only human, especially our staff. We will really get burned out. But we also want to finish this impeachment trial as soon as possible,” ayon sa lider ng Senado.
“If this continues at this pace, I can see this extending into next year. But our target is hopefully to finish by December. That is why the Senate will adjust its schedule so that we can achieve our target of one witness per day,” dagdag niya. Ernie Reyes
