MANILA, Philippines – Pinayuhan ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ang mga Filipino H-1B visa holder na iwasan ang “unnecessary travel” sa labas ng Estados Unidos hangga’t nililinaw pa ng Washington ang rules sa re-entry.
Kamakailan lamang ay nilagdaan ni US President Donald Trump ang isang proklamasyon na nagpapataw ng $100,000 fee para sa mga bagong aplikante ng H-1B visa para sa skilled foreign workers.
Inanunsyo rin ni Trump sa kanyang Setyembre 19 statement ang “restriction on entry of certain non-immigrant workers” sa Estados Unidos, at tinukoy ang pang-aabuso umano sa H-1B visa system ng mga American employer.
“The recent proclamation restricting the entry of certain nonimmigrant workers to the United States has raised understandable concern among our kababayans,” ayon sa DFA.
“Filipinos account for 1.3% of all H-1B visa holders and those already in the US will not be affected by the mandatory $100,000 visa fee,” dagdag pa ng DFA.
Gayunman, hinikayat ng DFA ang mga Filipino na “to consult their employers in advance, as employers may be required to shoulder additional costs, such as the one-time fee of $100,000, when facilitating their employee’s re-entry.”
Itinatag noong 1990 sa pamamagitan ng batas upang tugunan ang kakulangan sa paggawa, ang H-1B program ay nagbibigay ng temporary work status sa mga highly-skilled foreign workers sa US, subalit hindi ito residency.
Sa nakalipas na taon, maraming employer ang nag-sponsor ng mga visa holder para sa permanent residency o tinatawag na green cards, isang hakbang tungo sa pagkakaroon ng US citizenship.
“The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C., together with our consulates general across the United States, is closely monitoring the implementation of this proclamation. We remain ready to provide guidance and assistance to our Filipino community as needed,” ayon sa DFA. Kris Jose
