MANILA, Philippines – Inaprubahan ng Provincial Board of Leyte ang resolusyon na nag-iimbita sa Department of National Defense (DND) para ikonsidera ang probinsya sa expansion plans sa pagtatayo ng naval bases at airstrips sa buong bansa.
Ayon kay Board Member Carlo Loreto, may-akda ng resolusyon, ito ay logical para sa DND na bumuo ng pasilidad sa Leyte, na ‘strategically located’ sa puso ng Visayas.
“I’m confident that logic will prevail over irrational bias,” ani Loreto.
Sinabi pa niya na magsasagawa sila ng konsultasyon sa iba’t ibang sektor para tugunan ang posibleng mga pangamba sa proposal.
Umaasa naman ito na susuportahan ng mga mamamayan ang inisyatibo na palakasin ang defense at economic opportunities.
“Enemies will stay away because Leyte will have more naval ships, warplanes, and uniformed personnel in the vicinity,” ani Loreto.
“What this proposal is sure to entice are investments in ancillary industries such as restaurants, warehouses, hotels, and other commercial establishments, creating more business and meaningful employment opportunities,” dagdag pa niya.
Tampok sa proposal ang pangako ng probinsya na mag-ambag sa national security at palakasin ang economic development sa pamamagitan ng strategic defense investments.
Matatandaan na inanunsyo ni Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro ang planong magtayo ng karagdagang naval bases at airstrips sa buong bansa bilang bahagi ng estratehiya ng DND na palakasin ang defense capabilities ng bansa.
Susuporta ito sa mga bagong assets ng Philippine Navy sa ilalim ng modernization program ng Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Ngayong linggo, kinumpirma ni Teodoro ang planong pagtatayo ng bagong naval base sa Misamis Oriental na magsisilbing central operations hub ng Philippine Navy sa Mindanao.
Samantala, sinabi ni Loreto na ang pagtukoy sa lugar sa pasilidad sa Leyte ay responsibilidad na ng mga eksperto mula sa DND.
“The DND will have technical experts to select areas based on their specific parameters. Even the designs and layouts will only be accessible to officials with the proper clearances,” aniya. RNT/JGC
