FOR decades, PBGen. Hansel Marantan faced danger on the streets, pursued criminal syndicates and confronted powerful personalities. Now, his battlefield has moved to the national security arena.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. appointed Marantan as Executive Director of the Anti-Terrorism Council–Program Management Center, with the rank of Undersecretary — giving a seasoned police commander a wider mission beyond the PNP.
Marantan’s police career was shaped by demanding assignments with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Area Police Command–Southern Luzon, Davao City Police Office, Highway Patrol Group, National Capital Region Police Office and Police Regional Office 4A.
He handled operations involving organized crime, armed personalities and high-profile cases, experiences that tested both his leadership and decision-making under pressure.
His career also included confrontations with influential figures, including Pastor Apollo Quiboloy and former Negros Oriental congressman Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr.
But his journey was not without controversy. The 2008 Parañaque shootout and the 2013 Atimonan operation became difficult chapters in his career. Still, Marantan remained in the service and eventually rose to the rank of brigadier general.
As Highway Patrol Group chief, he also led a strong campaign against cigarette-smuggling syndicates, resulting in major seizures of suspected smuggled tobacco products and other contraband reportedly worth nearly ₱3 billion.
That experience now takes on greater meaning.
Counter-terrorism requires intelligence, coordination and prevention — not simply arrests. It demands understanding how networks operate, how money moves and how influence can be used to threaten national security.
Marantan has spent much of his career learning those realities from the ground. Now, he must apply that experience at the national level.
The uniform may be gone, but the mission has only become bigger. His next battle is no longer just to enforce the law — it is to help protect the nation.
