MANILA, Philippines – Sinabi ni dating Commission on Audit chairperson at kasalukuyang Philippine Competition Chairperson Michael Aguinaldo noong Huwebes na iuutos niya ang pagrepaso sa mga patakaran sa pagpapalabas ng Statements of Assets and Liabilities sa publiko, kung siya ay itinalagang Ombudsman ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.
Sinimulan ng Judicial and Bar Council ang kanilang mga pampublikong panayam para sa pagpapalit ng retiradong Ombudsman na si Samuel Martires kay Aguinaldo bilang unang kandidatong kinapanayam.
“I think there is a need to strike a balance somewhere, the right of the public to know and the limited rights of government employees,” ani Aguinaldo.
Noong panahon ni Martires, ang Office of the Ombudsman ay nagbigay ng limitadong access sa media sa mga SALN ng mga opisyal ng gobyerno.
Sa kanya namang panig, nangako si Department of the Interior and Local Government Undersecretary Romeo Benitez na lalabanan ang korapsyon batay sa kanyang karanasan sa mga ilegal na aktibidad sa mga local government units.
“I will start an honest, a no nonsense and new version of investigative work leading to prosecution if only for us to help this government rid of perennial problem of corruption,” saad ni Benitez.
Ayon kay Benitez na “re-tool” niya ang Office of the Ombudsman para tugunan ang mga backlog sa mga kaso.
“I promise an independent Ombudsman that is free from political influence and possible domination or interferences from officialdom,” ani Benitez.
Pagkatapos ng kanyang panayam sa JBC, sinabi ni Benitez na bukas siya na muling bisitahin ang patakaran sa SALN, dahil ang mga probisyon sa SALN sa Republic Act No. 6713 o ang Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials ay napapailalim sa mga kundisyon.
“This is one aspect of the law that should be the subject of revisit because this has been susceptible to so many interpretations. One particular official would say that the SALN of every individual or public official should be made public and accessible; some are saying they should not be accessible,” aniya.
