MANILA, Philippines – Tinanggal na ng Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) ang mahigpit na age requirement sa posisyon na Associate Justice o Chief Justice ng Supreme Court (SC).
Sa Resolution No. JBC 01-2025, inalis ng JBC ang probisyon ng Rule 8, Section 1 ng JBC No. 2020-01 hinggil sa age requirement para mahikayat ang mas marami na mag-apply sa posisyon bilang Associate Justice o Chief Justice ng Supreme Court.
“The deletion of said portions of Rule 8, Section 1 of JBC No. 2020-01 is meant to widen the base of candidates and encourage more applicants to apply for the position of Associate Justice or Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.”
Magkakaroon ng vacancy sa SC sa pagretiro ni Associate Justice Mario V. Lopez sa Hunyo 4, 2025. Maging si Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo ay matatapos ang termino sa Nobyembre 6, 2026.
Ang mga miyembro ng hudikatura ay nagreretiro sa edad na 70.
Pinalawig hanggang Abril 14 ng JBC ang aplikasyon para sa mababakante na pwesto ni Lopez.
Ang JBC ang constitutional body na tumatangap, sumusuri at siyang nagsusumite sa Pangulo ng bansa ng rekomendasyon para sa posisyon sa Judiciary, Office of the Ombudsman, at Legal Education Board. TERESA TAVARES
