MANILA, Philippines – Inimbitahan ni Commodore Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on West Philippine Sea (WPS) si Senador Rodante Marcoleta na lumahok sa maritime domain awareness flight sa Kalayaan Island Group (KIG).
Sa post, sinabi ni Tarriela na ang imbitasyon ay magbibigay-daan kay Marcoleta “to stand for our rights in the West Philippine Sea.”
“Let us give Senator Marcoleta a chance… I suggest that the good senator join the MDA flight to the Kalayaan Island Group in the future,” ani Tarriela.
Ang imbitasyon ay kasunod ng kontrobersiya sa umano’y pahayag ni Marcoleta na ang Pilipinas ay maaaring isuko ang KIG dahil ang ilang features nito ay nasa labas na ng exclusive economic zone ng bansa.
Kalaunan ay nilinaw ni Marcoleta at sinabing ang kanyang mga detractor ay “deliberately abbreviating the context” ng kanyang sinabi sa interpelasyon sa pagdinig ng Commission on Appointments sa kumpirmasyon ng mga heneral ng Armed Forces of the Philippines.
“I informed them that for the West Philippine Sea to be listed in the International Hydrographic Organization, we would need to deposit maps with the United Nations to notify the world that we are usurping part of the high seas by including the Kalayaan Island Group, since it lies beyond our exclusive economic zone,” ayon kay Marcoleta.
“I said that this is not possible because it would violate the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, unless of course we give up the Kalayaan Island Group to solve the problem,” dagdag pa niya.
Samantala, tampok sa imbitasyon ni Tarriela ang MDA flights na regular na isinagawa ng mga awtoridad ng bansa upang imonitor ang maritime condition at igiit ang presensya ng bansa sa WPS.
Kasama rito ang mga eroplano ng PCG at iba pang ahensya, pag-survey ng sea routes at pagmonitor sa maritime activities ng ibang bansa sa naturang dagat.
“He does not have to worry; I can arrange it, and I would be happy to join the operation as well,” sinabi ni Tarriela.
