MANILA, Philippines – Tinatayang nasa mahigit 10.8 milyong Filipino na ang nasa ibang bansa mula Hulyo hanggang Disyembre 2024, ayon sa Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
Sa pagdinig ng Senate Committee on Foreign Relations nitong Miyerkules, sinabi ng DFA na kasalukuyang mayroong 10,804,958 overseas Filipinos.
Higit sa kalahati ng bilang o 5,416,536 overseas Filipinos, ay nasa Amerika.
Sinundan ito ng Asia and the Pacific region na may 2,440,619 overseas Filipinos o 22.59% ng kabuuang bilang; at Middle East na may 2,103,142 Filipinos o 19.46%.
Malaking bahagi o 54.41% ng overseas Filipinos ay permanent migrants.
Higit naman sa 1/3 o 34.59% ang dokumentado o temporary migrants, habang 11.01% ang irregular o undocumented.
Pagdating sa mga bansa, nangunguna rito ang US na may 4,424,687 overseas Filipinos; sinundan ng Canada sa 973,881 Filipinos, at Malaysia sa 950,043 Filipinos.
Iniulat din ng DFA na mayroong 67 Philippine embassies sa buong mundo kasama ang 27 Consulates General at 4 Permanent Missions.
Mayroon namang 31 Foreign Service Posts (FSPs) sa Asia and the Pacific, 29 sa Europe, 20 sa Middle East at Africa, at 18 sa Americas.
Sa mga nalalabing buwan ng 2025, plano ng DFA na magbukas ng embahada sa Suva, Fiji, at consulates general sa Busan, South Korea, Ho Chi Minh sa Vietnam, at Seattle sa Washington, USA.
May plano rin itong magbukas ng mga embahada sa Accra, Ghana, at Astana sa Kazakhstan, maging ang consulate general sa Miami, Florida para sa 2026.
“It’s very important even in areas where there are very few Filipinos or small communities because of trade relations, economic relations, and to establish diplomatic ties especially in regions we are hardly present… I believe that there were lost opportunities [when we closed embassies in 2012], even for trade and commerce economically. I supported the reopening of embassies and consulates from 2015 onwards. I hope you will continue to do that,” sinabi ni Senator Loren Legarda. RNT/JGC
