MANILA, Philippines – Kinondena ng Photojournalist’s Center of the Philippines (PCP) ang “violence, harassment, and intimidation committed by state forces against members of the press” sa panahon ng anti-corruption rally sa Maynila noong Setyembre 21.
Sa isang pahayag nitong Linggo, sinabi ng PCP na ang mga karanasan ng news media noong Setyembre 21 “demonstrate a disturbing pattern of hostility towards the press, reflecting a climate of impunity that emboldens state forces to attack those who document civic unrest.”
Binanggit ng PCP ang isang insidente na kinasasangkutan ng photojournalist na si Zedrich Madrid, na nakitang sinalakay ng mga opisyal ng pulisya habang sinusubukang kunan ng litrato ang isang patuloy na pag-aresto sa Mendiola pagkatapos na maghiwa-hiwalay ang mga nagpoprotesta.
“The moment I saw a police was doing police brutality to a protester, I decided to shoot it [with my camera], but then there were five to 10 police around me, and I didn’t realize it immediately, but I was also beaten with an arnis stick. Thankfully, I was wearing a helmet, and I was also being pulled by the shirt from the side,” ayon kay Madrid.
Ito rin ay nakunan ng mga larawan ng mga kapwa photojournalist ni Madrid.
Ibinahagi din ng PCP na kinaharap umano ng mga miyembro ng Foreign Correspondents’ Association of the Philippines ang “intimidation, with some being threatened with batons and riot shields and ordered to stop taking pictures.”
“One week after the incident, no police officer or state agent has been held accountable for the attacks on photojournalists and video journalists—professionals who risk their safety to document the events for the public’s right to know,” saad ng PCP sa isang pahayag.
“Police officers, ununiformed, armed intelligence agents, and other members of the state forces must be taught how to respect human rights and the rights of the free press. The culture of impunity is perpetuated when those tasked to protect instead become perpetrators of abuse,” dagdag ng PCP.
Hiniling din nito ang pagsisiyasat sa mga pag-atake sa mga mamamahayag, pananagutan mula sa mga opisyal ng pulisya, at “concrete safeguards” para sa mga mamamahayag sa mga protesta at pampublikong pagtitipon.
“PCP will not waver in defending the rights and safety of those who bring the truth to light through their lens,” patuloy ng PCP.
Itinanggi ni Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla ang anumang karahasan ng mga pulis noong Setyembre 21 na mga rally at sa halip ay iginiit na ang mga pulis ang tinamaan at binubugbog ng mga nagpoprotesta.
Inilarawan din ng Malacañang ang mga nagprotesta na sangkot sa diumano’y riot bilang “mga kriminal,” ngunit tinuligsa ng mga grupo ng karapatan ang mga pag-aresto at karahasan sa mga nagpoprotesta at sa media. RNT/MND
