MANILA, Philippines — Malugod na tinanggap ni Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. ang karagdagang tariff exemptions na ibinigay ng Estados Unidos para sa ilang produktong agrikultural mula sa Pilipinas.
“So I’m happy that the anxiety of our industries especially for fruits — bananas, pineapple, coconut — has calmed down,” pahayag ni Tiu Laurel sa isang panayam.
Inanunsyo nina Trade Secretary Cristina Roque at incoming Finance Secretary Frederick Go noong Martes na ipinagkaloob ni US President Donald Trump ang dagdag na exemptions mula sa 19% reciprocal tariff, na sumasaklaw sa mga produktong agrikultural na hindi ginagawa sa Amerika tulad ng coconuts, pineapples, dried mangoes at fruit juices.
Ayon kay Tiu Laurel, ang 19% tariff ay naging “anxiety issue” para sa exporters dahil maraming investor ang nag-aalinlangan sa “what lies ahead.” Ngunit ngayon ay malinaw na aniya ang direksyon.
“The President’s directive was to support our export products. And that will be our banner program for next year,” aniya, sabay-diin na dapat nang magtanim nang mas marami upang mapalawak ang export volume sa US.
Kabilang sa mga agricultural exports na sakop ng exemptions ang:
Coconuts (copra) oil
Fruit juices
Processed pineapples
Desiccated coconuts
Prepared or preserved coconuts
Bananas (other than pulp)
Dried guavas, mangoes, mangosteen
Frozen tuna fillets
Rice wafer products
Confectionery products
Hindi na rin papatawan ng 19% tariff ang coffee at tea, cocoa at spices, oranges, tomatoes, beef, at ilang fertilizers.
Paalala naman ng Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) na ang suspension ng tariffs para sa mahigit 200 agricultural products ay hindi partikular na ibinigay para sa Pilipinas, kundi bahagi ng hakbang ng US para bawasan ang inflationary pressures.
