MANILA, Philippines – Sinabi ni Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri na handa siyang bumaba bilang Senate majority leader sa huling bahagi ng 2027 upang mabigyan ng pagkakataon ang iba pang senador na humawak ng mga posisyon sa pamunuan ng Senado.
“Actually, I also indicated that I am willing to step down as majority floor leader and also let my Senior Deputy Majority Leader Sen. JV Ejercito sit as majority floor leader, and I’ll just be a member of the Senate,” aniya.
Ang kanyang pahayag ay lumabas kasunod ng mga ulat na nagkaroon na umano ng kasunduan sa loob ng majority bloc na hayaan si Sen. Loren Legarda na maging Senate President bago matapos ang kanyang termino sa 2028.
Gayunman, sinabi ni Zubiri na hindi pa pinal ang kasunduan, ngunit inaprubahan na umano ito ni Senate President Vicente Sotto III.
“It’s not official, but the understanding was in the latter part of Sen. Sotto’s term as Senate president of the 20th Congress that we will elect the first woman Senate president in the history of this Congress… Better that way so that the majority remains solid, solidly behind each other, the majority,” paliwanag ni Zubiri.
Samantala, sinabi ni Zubiri na kung magkakaroon ng pagbabago sa pamunuan ng Senado, ito ay magmumula pa rin sa majority bloc.
Ayon kay Zubiri, napag-usapan ang usapin sa isang pulong ng majority group sa Senate lounge, na nagsimula umano bilang biro ngunit nauwi sa seryosong plano.
“So yesterday, when we were discussing inside the lounge, I made a joke saying that maybe at the end term of Senator Sotto (Senate President Vicente Sotto III), she (Sen. Loren Legarda) can become the Senate President, the first woman Senate President. And he gladly agreed, and he said, ‘yes, why not?’” ani Zubiri.
Nilinaw niya na hindi ito term-sharing sa pagitan nina Sotto at Sen. Loren Legarda, kundi si Legarda ang papalit bilang Senate President sa huling bahagi ng termino ni Sotto.
Ayon kay Zubiri, alam na ni Legarda ang plano at naroon siya noong napag-usapan ito. “I think congratulations are in order to hopefully, our future first female Senate president,” ani Zubiri.
Sinabi rin ng senador na posibleng mahalal si Legarda bilang Senate president pagkatapos lumipat ang Senado sa bagong gusali sa Taguig City, na inaasahang mangyayari sa huling bahagi ng 2027.
“So I think the idea is by 2027, I think late 2027, we will transfer to the new building… After which, of course, before the 2028 elections, the good Sen. Loren Legarda could sit as Senate President,” ayon kay Zubiri. RNT/MND
