MANILA, Philippines — Umabot na sa 1,824 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) na naapektuhan ng tumitinding tensyon sa Middle East ang nabigyan ng on-site assistance ng pamahalaan, ayon sa Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) at Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) nitong Miyerkules.
Sa press briefing sa Mandaluyong City, sinabi ni Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac na ibinigay ang tulong alinsunod sa direktiba ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. na tiyakin ang kapakanan at proteksyon ng mga OFW at kanilang pamilya.
“So, we have assisted. Our posts have assisted thus far, this is a live count, of course, 1,824 given on-site welfare,” aniya.
Ayon naman kay OWWA Chief Patricia Yvonne Caunan, kabilang sa ibinigay na tulong ang pagkain, hygiene kits, pansamantalang tirahan at accommodation, welfare checks, pagbisita sa mga ospital, at pagtugon sa mga katanungan tungkol sa repatriation at evacuation.
Iniulat din ni Cacdac na nasa 236 OFWs na na-stranded sa iba’t ibang international airports, kabilang ang Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Manchester sa United Kingdom, Rome, at ilang lugar sa Eastern Africa, ang nabigyan ng tulong. Sa bilang na ito, 22 OFWs na na-stranded sa Addis Ababa Bole International Airport sa Ethiopia ang na-rebook na at nakatakdang makauwi sa Pilipinas.
“Our posts have assisted thus far 1,824 OFWs onsite, and we have provided 297 accommodations, 171 land transports, and 134 domestic tickets for workers returning to Visayas and Mindanao,” sabi ni Caunan.
Sinabi rin ng mga opisyal na nasa 1,189 OFWs mula sa mga apektadong bansa ang nagpahayag ng intensyong magparepatriate.
“So this is as of 12 noon, March 4, today. And I just like to stress that this is a moving number as we speak. So for Bahrain, we have received 278; from Israel, 46; from Kuwait, 62; from Dubai, 231; from Abu Dhabi, 246; and from Qatar, 173, as of today….para makumpleto ko na (so I could complete this), Lebanon five,” dagdag ni Caunan.
Gayunman, sinabi ni Cacdac na binanggit ni Pangulong Marcos na “this is not as yet the time to undertake a government-sponsored mass repatriation effort” dahil sa pagsasara ng airspace sa ilang apektadong bansa sa Gulf at sa Israel.
“Yung (The) safety, which is all beyond our control, as you know. With the rocket fire, drone attacks, and missile attacks, it’s all beyond us. So we are looking into whether we can undertake a repatriation effort first given that there are attendant risks. So we want those risks down to zero as much as possible before we undertake repatriation,” paliwanag ni Cacdac.
Sinabi rin niya na pinag-aaralan ang mga alternatibong opsyon gaya ng land evacuation sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of National Defense, at mga awtoridad ng host countries.
Dagdag pa ni Cacdac, nakikipagtulungan ang DMW sa Embassy of Israel sa Pilipinas upang maiuwi ang labi ni Mary Anne De Vera, isang OFW na nasawi matapos tamaan ng debris habang papunta sa isang shelter kasama ang kanyang ward.
Aniya, nananatiling may mga restriksyon sa Tel Aviv at sarado pa rin ang airspace nito.
“Ambassador (Dana) Kursh here in Manila has already said that the Israeli government is determined to bring her home,” dagdag niya.
Hinimok ni Cacdac ang mga Pilipino sa Middle East na patuloy na sundin ang mga security protocol ng kanilang host countries para sa kanilang kaligtasan.
“We remind our OFWs to continue to observe and follow the security protocols and advisories issued by local authorities and our embassies,” ani Cacdac. Dave Baluyot
