NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines = Ipinagtanggol ni Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson noong Biyernes ang Philippine Army matapos ang engkuwentro laban sa New People’s Army (NPA) na ikinamatay ng 19 katao, at iginiit niyang ito ay isang lehitimong operasyon.
Ayon kay Lacson, “We believe it was a legitimate encounter.”
Aniya, hindi magagawa ng Army ang operasyon nang walang impormasyon mula sa komunidad. “We should realize that the Army could not have done that without information from the community… so, clearly the community helped guide the Philippine Army to run after their target. We do not question the Philippine Army,” dagdag niya.
Pinuri rin niya ang mga sundalo: “In fact we should appreciate the men and women of the Philippine Army who are out there every day sacrificing their lives for us to be free and to live peacefully.”
Sa panawagan para sa peace talks, sinabi ng gobernador na dapat magbitaw muna ng armas ang mga rebelde: “Even if you want to talk peace, do the first thing, lay down your arms,” at idinagdag na “there is only one army and that is the Philippine Army.”
Tumanggi rin siya sa panawagan ng panibagong imbestigasyon sa insidente sa Toboso, dahil may isinasagawang imbestigasyon na ang Commission on Human Rights. “If you ask me I will not call for an investigation because I trust the Philippine Army encounter with the NPAs was legitimate,” aniya.
Samantala, sinuportahan din ng Negros Association of Chief Executives (Negros-ACE) ang AFP at sinabi nilang mahalaga ang tungkulin nito sa pagpapanatili ng kapayapaan at seguridad. Hinikayat din nila ang NPA na talikuran na ang armadong pakikibaka at piliin ang mapayapang paraan ng pagresolba ng mga isyu.
Ayon sa grupo ng mga alkalde, mahalagang tugunan ang mga problema ng kahirapan at hindi pagkakapantay-pantay sa pamamagitan ng demokratiko at legal na proseso, at nanawagan sila ng “healing over retaliation, unity over division, and compassion over violence.” RNT/MND
