MANILA, Philippines – Dinala sa Quezon City jail sa Payatas si Senador Jinggoy Estrada noong Lunes ng gabi matapos siyang boluntaryong sumuko kasunod ng paglalabas ng arrest warrant ng Sandiganbayan Fifth Division kaugnay ng kasong plunder, isang hindi napapiyansahang kaso.
Mula sa Senado, nagtungo si Estrada sa Camp Crame dakong alas-3 ng hapon kung saan isinailalim siya sa booking procedures kabilang ang fingerprinting, mugshot, at medical clearance, ayon kay Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
Matapos nito ay dinala siya sa Sandiganbayan bago tuluyang ilipat sa Quezon City jail, kung saan dumating ang convoy dakong alas-8 ng gabi.
Nakaugat ang kaso sa alegasyong tumanggap si Estrada ng P573 milyong kickback mula sa mga flood control project ng Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Nahaharap din siya sa dalawang bilang ng graft.
Sa harap ng media bago sumuko, itinanggi ni Estrada ang mga paratang laban sa kanya.
“If this is the price I must pay for the decisions I have made and the principles I have chosen to uphold, then I am prepared to face the consequences—however difficult they may be, especially for my family,” aniya.
“I will not be broken by accusations, nor will I yield to political pressure. I will meet these charges head-on, defend my honor through due process, and place my faith in the truth. I will be proceeding now to the CIDG to voluntarily surrender myself,” dagdag niya.
Sinabi rin ni Estrada na mananatili siya sa majority bloc ng Senado at ibinunyag ang umano’y mga alok na iwanan ang mayorya kapalit ng pagbasura sa kanyang mga kaso. Aniya, hindi rin niya kukunin ang kanyang suweldo at hindi siya hihiling ng Senate custody.
“I stand my ground because what is at stake here goes far beyond my personal circumstances. What is at stake is the independence of the Senate itself,” aniya.
“This institution must never become vulnerable to external pressure. It must remain free from political coercion, free from undue influence, and free from any scheme designed to weaken its constitutional role as a co-equal and independent branch of government,” dagdag pa niya.
Kasama rin sa kinasuhan sina dating DPWH secretary Manuel Bonoan at ilang opisyal ng ahensya. Ito ang ikatlong pagkakataon sa loob ng 25 taon na naharap si Estrada sa kasong plunder at iba pang kaugnay na kaso. Santi Celario
