MANILA, Philippines – Nagsama-sama kahapon, Hunyo 19 ng umaga sa Palma Hall AS Steps sa University of the Philippines Diliman ang mga guro, akademiko, estudyante, education workers, at mga tagapagtaguyod sa ilalim ng General Education Movement (GEM) at UP Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas upang gunitain ang ika-165 na kaarawan ni Jose Rizal at muling igiit ang pagtatanggol sa makabayang edukasyon.
Nag-alay sila ng wreath na may mensaheng “Makabayang Edukasyon, Ipaglaban!” at nagsagawa ng maikling programa na tumalakay sa patuloy na kabuluhan ng mga ideya ni Rizal tungkol sa edukasyon, kritikal na pag-iisip, at kamalayang pambansa.
Ayon sa GEM, ang paggunita ay nagaganap sa gitna ng pagtutol ng mga guro at estudyante sa panukalang Reframed General Education Curriculum Component (RGECC) ng Commission on Higher Education (CHED), na layong bawasan ang General Education units at lalo umanong magpahina sa Humanities at Social Sciences.
“Rizal understood that education is not merely the acquisition of skills but the cultivation of critical and socially conscious citizens,” ayon sa GEM. “To commemorate Rizal while allowing the continued erosion of History, Literature, Philosophy, Ethics, and other disciplines that nurture critical thought would be to ignore the very lessons his life and works teach us.”
Giit ng grupo, ang patuloy na pagbabawas sa mga asignaturang nagbibigay ng historical consciousness at civic understanding ay bahagi ng trend na nakatuon sa market demands at labor requirements.
“At a time when disinformation, historical distortion, social inequality, and democratic challenges persist, the country needs a strengthened General Education, not less,” dagdag nila. “The weakening of Humanities and Social Sciences undermines the capacity of students to understand society, engage in public life, and participate meaningfully in nation-building.”
Nanawagan ang GEM na tuluyang ibasura ang RGECC, palakasin ang kasalukuyang General Education framework, at tiyaking walang mawawalan ng trabaho dahil sa mga pagbabago sa kurikulum.
Hiniling din nila ang mas malawak at demokratikong konsultasyon sa mga guro, estudyante, at iba pang education stakeholders.
“Rizal’s legacy reminds us that education must serve the people and the nation,” ayon pa sa grupo. “The struggle for General Education is ultimately a struggle for an education system that develops critical, informed, and socially engaged Filipinos capable of confronting the challenges facing our country today.”
