MANILA, Philippines – Napatay sa isinagawang joint police at military raid sa Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte ang isang mataas na lider ng Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters na may patong sa ulo na P3 milyon, nitong madaling araw ng Linggo, Hulyo 5.
Kinilala ang napatay na suspek na si Esmael Abubakar, alyas Kumander Bungos, chairman ng Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters–Bungos Faction. Siya ang itinuturing na Top 1 Most Wanted Person sa regional level sa Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao at sa provincial level sa Maguindanao del Sur.
Sinalakay ng mga operatiba ng pulisya at militar ang kinaroroonan ni Abubakar sa Sitio Tambak, Barangay Calsada dakong alas-1:10 ng madaling araw. Ayon sa mga awtoridad, sa halip na sumuko nang mapayapa, umano’y kumuha ng baril si Abubakar at pinaputukan ang tactical team.
Narekober sa pinangyarihan ang isang caliber .45 pistol na may binurang serial number at may lamang bala sa chamber. Dinala si Abubakar sa isang ospital sa Maguindanao del Norte kung saan siya binawian ng buhay. Dinala naman sa himpilan ng pulisya para sa imbestigasyon ang mga kasama niya sa lugar nang isagawa ang operasyon.
Nahaharap si Abubakar sa ilang arrest warrant, kabilang ang dalawang bilang ng murder at multiple frustrated murder; qualified direct assaults with multiple attempted murder; murder with multiple frustrated murder; at destructive arson.
Sinabi ni PNP chief PGEN Nartatez na makatutulong ang pagkamatay ni Abubakar sa pagpapatuloy ng mga hakbang para sa kapayapaan at kaunlaran sa BARMM.
“All our kababayan in this area have suffered enough hardships as a result of armed conflict over years. It is our obligation in the PNP to sustain the gains of what have been so far achieved in terms of finally bringing genuine peace and development to our brothers and sisters in BARMM,” ani PGEN Nartatez.
Dating vice chairman for political affairs ng BIFF si Abubakar at kalaunan ay namuno sa grupo matapos ang pagkamatay ng founder nitong si Ameril Umbra Kato.
Ayon kay Lt. Gen. Donald M. Gumiran, commander ng Western Mindanao Command, malaking dagok sa mga armadong grupo sa Western Mindanao ang pagkakapatay kay Abubakar.
“This successful operation reflects the unwavering commitment of our security forces to uphold the rule of law and protect our communities from individuals who continue to resort to violence,” ani Gumiran.
Sa mga nakalipas na buwan, napatay rin ng puwersa ng pamahalaan ang ilang high-value leaders ng local terrorist groups at communist insurgency, kabilang sina Emarudin Kulaw, alyas “Alpha King,” lider ng Dawlah Islamiyah-Hassan Group; Amerol Mangoranca, alyas “Usman,” lider ng Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute Group; at Anthony Narvasa, alyas “Magaw,” kalihim ng Far South Mindanao Regional Committee ng communist group.
Sinabi ni Gumiran na pinahina ng mga operasyong ito ang liderato at kakayahang magsagawa ng operasyon ng mga armadong grupo sa rehiyon, lalo na sa nalalapit na inaugural parliamentary elections sa BARMM sa Setyembre.
Ang BIFF ay itinatag ni Kato bilang breakaway group mula sa Moro Islamic Liberation Front at tumututol sa anumang peace agreement sa pamahalaan. Naiugnay ang grupo sa iba’t ibang terror attacks sa central Mindanao, kabilang ang pag-ambush sa mga tauhan ng PNP sa Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur noong Marso 28.
“This operation did not only bring justice to all the victims of the senseless attacks of his group, this also gives another ray of hope for all our kababayan in BARMM to finally put an end to violence in their communities and enjoy a lasting peace and development that they fully deserve,” ani Nartatez.
