MANILA, Philippines – Nagbabala si dating Senate President Franklin Drilon sa tangkang pagtatago ng ebidensya sa papalapit na impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte na maaari umano itong magdulot ng sigalot at political instability sa bansa.
Sa pahayag, sinabi ni Drilon na ang “greatest risk” na kinakaharap ng bansa ngayon ay ang posibleng pagpalya ng impeachment process laban kay Duterte, katulad ng nangyari noon sa impeachment trial ni dating Pangulong Joseph Estrada.
Inalala ni Drilon na sa paglilitis kay Estrada noong 2001, ang senator-judges ay bumoto ng 11-10 laban sa pagbubukas ng umano’y “second envelope” na pinaniniwalaang naglalaman ng mas maraming ebidensya kaugnay sa P3.3 bilyong secret bank account ni Estrada.
Ang unang envelope ay hindi itinago ng mga senator-judge kung saan naglalaman ito ng mga dokumento na patungkol sa secret account sa Equitable-PCI Bank sa ilalim ng alyas ni Estrada na Jose Velarde.
Tumestigo ang senior vice president ng naturang bangko na nakita niya umano mismo si Estrada na pumirma ng account documents.
Si Drilon ang isa sa 10 senator-judges na bumoto para buksan ang ikalawang envelope, ngunit natalo ng 11 na bumoto kontra rito.
Dahil dito ay nag-walk out ang prosecution team bilang protesta.
Nagbunsod din ito ng kabi-kabilang rally na nagdala sa “EDSA 2” at nagpaalis kay Estrada sa pwesto na pinalitan naman ni noon ay Vice President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“That prompted an instability which resulted in the change of government. That is what we have to look out for. That is what our senators should be conscious about,” ani Drilon.
“The people would not stand for hiding the truth. In an impeachment trial, the public would like to know the truth, and attempts to hide the truth will not be accepted by our people,” dagdag ng dating Senate President.
“That is why we should be careful, because in my opinion, when the people will notice that there is an attempt to hide the truth, especially for personal and political ends, I cannot predict what the people will do.” RNT/JGC
