MANILA, Philippines – Iginiit ng progresibong grupo na Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) na hindi sila matitinag sa mga kasong isinampa laban sa mga aktibistang nagprotesta sa St. Gerrard Construction at sa House of Representatives.
“The police are mistaken if they think that their brutal response will instill fear among the people who are outraged by the flood control scandal, the obscene display of wealth by nepo families, and the systematic theft of taxpayers’ money,” pahayag ng Bayan nitong Sabado, Setyembre 6.
Pinaplano ng pulisya ang pagsasampa ng kaso laban sa mga raliyista na naghagis ng putik at nagsulat sa gate at pader ng opisina ng Discaya-owned St. Gerrard Construction sa Pasig City.
Nagdaos din ng kilos-protesta ang Bayan sa harap ng Kamara nitong Biyernes, kasabay ng budget hearing ng Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), kung saan nagkaroon ng komprontasyon sa pagitan ng mga raliyista at mga pulis.
Kinuwestiyon ng grupo ang bilis ng aksyon ng mga awtoridad laban sa mga nagrereklamo sa katiwalian, habang mabagal o walang ginagawa para papanagutin ang umano’y sangkot sa pagnanakaw ng bilyon-bilyong pondo ng bayan.
“The police should at least show empathy with the people who are fiercely demanding accountability and justice. But in the end, as always, they chose to blindly protect the class interest of the rich and powerful,” dagdag pa ng Bayan.
Giit nila, makatarungan ang ginawa nilang protesta sa St. Gerrard dahil sa umano’y maanomalyang flood control projects ng kompanya na nagresulta sa pagkasayang ng pondo at pagkasawi sa mga komunidad.
Sa harap ng Kamara naman, flood victims ang nanguna sa paghahagis ng putik at pintura bilang simbolikong protesta laban sa “corrupt at incompetent officials led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.”
Dagdag pa ng grupo, hindi raliyista kundi pulis ang nagpasimula ng gulo nang tangkain ang pag-aresto sa ilan.
“We assert that the protest action was held peacefully and it allowed various sectors to articulate their legitimate concerns and grievances against the government,” giit ng Bayan, na nanawagan din na huwag balewalain ang karapatan ng taumbayan sa malayang pamamahayag.
“Brace for more protests in the coming days and weeks as more people are speaking out and coordinating actions for a sustained fight against corruption and pursuing the demand for truth, accountability, and justice,” dagdag nila.
Samantala, nanawagan si Monsignor Meliton Oso ng Archdiocese of Jaro na isama rin sa imbestigasyon ang mga mambabatas, at hindi lang mga kontratista, sa maanomalyang flood control projects.
“If you steal from me, I alone am affected. But if you steal from the national coffers, you rob the whole country—especially the poor,” ani Oso, sabay panawagan ng isang independent commission para manguna sa imbestigasyon. RNT/JGC
