MANILA, Philippines – Nanawagan si Senate President Francis Escudero nitong Lunes, Marso 31, ng mas maraming inspeksyon ng mga pampubliko at pribadong istruktura sa buong bansa kasunod ng magnitude 7.7 na lindol na yumanig sa Myanmar.
“We must see to it that regular inspections are conducted on public infrastructure and on the structures constructed by the private sector, particularly the office and residential buildings that have sprouted over the past decades,” saad sa pahayag ni Escudero.
Ang panawagang ito ay kasunod ng pagpasa ng Senado sa ilang mga panukala na layong i-update at palakasin ang Building Code.
Kabilang sa mga ito ay ang Senate Bill (SB) 289 at SB Nos. 1181, 1467, at 1970 na inihain nina Senado Christopher Lawrence Go, Ramon Revilla Jr., at Majority Leader Francis Tolentino.
Layon ng mga panukalang ito na patungan ang Presidential Decree No. 1096 o National Building Code of the Philippines, at institusyonalisasyon ng mas mahigpit na inspeksyon at certification process ng mga local government unit.
Iginiit ni Escudero na ang kasalukuyang Building Code ay kulang sa komprehensibong probisyon sa structural integrity sa panahon ng mga lindol.
Habang ang National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP), na updated noong 2015, na nagsisilbing referral guideline ay dapat ding epektibong ipatupad sa lahat ng construction sectors.
Tinukoy ni Escudero ang pag-aaral ng Japan International Cooperation Agency, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, at Metro Manila Development Authority noong 2004 na posibleng magdulot ng 34,000 kamatayan ang magnitude 7.2 na lindol na tatama sa Metro Manila.
