MANILA, Philippines- Nakaaalarma ang mataas na rate ng premature cancer deaths sa Pilipinas, ayon sa senior government researcher.
“If you look at the data in the Philippines, the rate of premature deaths is too high,” paglalahad ni Valerie Ulep, senior researcher ng government Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), sa Kapihan forum nitong Aug. 30.
Ani Ulep, labis na mataas ang rate ng premature deaths dahil sa cancer sa Pilipinas kumpara sa ibang bansa.
“Let’s look at cancer in terms of premature deaths,” sabi ni Ulep. “We’re even higher than Cambodia,” dagdag niya.
Sa Singapore, sinabi ni Ulep na ang rate ng premature deaths dahil sa cancer ay 30 hanggang 40 porsyento lamang.
Aniya pa, sa naiuulat na 25,000 cancer cases kada taon sa Pilipinas, 9,000 hanggang 9,500 ay breast cancers.
Inihayag niya ang pagkabahala sa mataas na porsyento ng premature cancer deaths sa bansa, na aniya ay 50 hanggang 60 porsyento ng cancer deaths ay “premature” o mga naagapan sana.
Maraming kababaihan sa Pilipinas ang nasasawi mula sa breast cancer sa peak years ng kanilang productivity, ani Ulep batay sa resulta ng pag-aaral ng kanyang grupo.
“If you look at deaths in the Philippines, many are dying at the peak of their careers,” pahayag ni Ulep. “Imagine, they die at the peak of their productivity,” patuloy niya.
Napag-alaman din ng kanyang team na hindi bababa sa 9,000 cancer patients ang namamatay kada taon sa Pilipinas.
“If half of these deaths is premature, or preventable, then more than 4,000 people die yearly when these deaths could have been avoided,” wika niya.
Ipinaliwanag ni Ulep na karaniwang natutukoy ang cancer survival rates sa uri ng cancer at stage nito.
Subalit, iginiit niya na “early detection increases the chance of survival.” RNT/SA
