MANILA, Philippines – Mahigpit na tututulan ng Office of the Ombudsman ang mosyon ni dating speaker at Leyte 1st District Representarive Martin Romualdez para sa hospital deention, ayon kay Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano nitong Miyerkules, Setyembre 9.
“The prosecutors will strongly oppose the motion. In fact, the prosecutors will ask that not just one doctor but a team of government doctors assess whether or not the illnesses declared need confinement or can be managed outside of the hospital,” ani Clavano.
“If his illnesses can be managed from outside of the hospital, the prosecutors will move that he be immediately transferred to the regular detention facility as all other accused in non-bailable cases,” dagdag pa.
Si Romualdez ay inaresto noong Lunes sa Cardinal Santos Medical Center sa San Juan City, sa kaparehong araw na inihain ng Office of the Ombudsman ang P7.4-billion plunder charge laban sa kanya at tatlo iba pa sa umano’y kaugnayan sa kickback scheme sa flood control projects.
Sa kaparehong araw ay humingi si Romualdez ng approval sa Sandiganbayan Third Division na payagan siya sa “continued hospital confinement.”
Sa siyam na pahinang manipestasyon sa Sandiganbayan, sinabi ni Romualdez na siya ay isinugod sa ospital noong Setyembre 7, 2026 at tinukoy ang medical history kaugnay ng kanyang cardiovascular health at brain condition.
Nitong Martes, sinabi naman ni Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla na hihilingin ng Philippine National Police (PNP) sa korte na payagan ang paglilipat kay Romualdez mula sa Cardinal Santos Medical Center patungong PNP General Hospital sa Camp Crame, Quezon City.
“Meantime, kami po ay magmo-motion for custody ni Martin Romualdez para dalhin sa Camp Crame hospital,” ani Remulla.
Itinakda ng Sandiganbayan ang court hearing bukas, Setyembre 10 upang tukuyin kung kailangang manatili sa hospital arrest si Romualdez.
Inatasan din si Romualdez na dumalo sa hearing sa kanyang mosyon ng patuloy na hospital confinement. RNT/JGC
