MANILA, Philippines – Hinimok ng toxics watchdog EcoWaste Coalition ang publiko na iwasan ang pagsunog ng mga post-disaster debris.
Sa isang pahayag, sinabi ng EcoWaste na kasama sa disaster debris ang mga basura at mga labi mula sa mga bagyo at iba pang kalamidad, tulad ng mga natumbang puno, mga scrap ng kahoy, mga nasirang bahagi ng bahay, mga basang kasangkapan, mga sirang appliances, at pangkalahatang basura.
“Please work with your local authorities in ensuring the ecological management of post-typhoon waste in your neighborhood,” ayon kay Aileen Lucero, ang pambansang coordinator ng EcoWaste Coalition.
Sinuportahan ng EcoWaste ang napapanahong paalala ng Bacolod City government laban sa open burning of disaster debris, isang practice na itinuturing na delikado lalo na sa mga lugar na tinamaan ng Super Typhoon Tino.
Nauna rito, kinumpirma ng Bureau of Fire Protection na ang usok mula sa ilang lugar sa lungsod kasunod ng pananalasa ng super typhoon ay “most likely due to the burning of trees and branches.”
“As the City Government continues with its road clearing and cleanup operations, Mayor Greg G. Gasataya is asking everyone to please avoid burning debris in your backyards. This practice is prohibited by law and can cause health and safety problems for our community,” saad ng Bacolod City Communications Office (BCCO).
Ayon sa EcoWaste ang open burning ay ipinagbabawal sa ilalim ng R.A. 8749 (Clean Air Act) at R.A. 9003 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act) dahil ito ay naglalabas ng mga toxic pollutant at nakakasira sa mga reusable material, tulad ng organics na maaaring i-compost upang mapabuti ang kalusugan ng lupa.
Nakasaad sa R.A. 8749, “no person shall be allowed to burn any materials in any quantities, which shall cause the emission of toxic and poisonous fumes.”
Ayon pa sa R.A. 9003, “the open burning of solid waste” ay ipinagbabawal na gawain.
“Open burning generates a number of environmental pollutants from the byproduct smoke, residue and ash such as dioxins and furans, particulate matter, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, and greenhouse gases,” ayon sa EcoWaste.
