MANILA, Philippines – NAGSAGAWA ng combat drills ang US at Philippine marines sa Itbayat, Batanes, sa kahabaan ng Bashi Channel malapit sa southern Taiwan, bagay na maaaring magpasiklab sa hidwaang pangmilitar ng Estados Unidos at Tsina.
Ang ipinakitang ‘allied battle readiness’ sa Itbayat sa Batanes province ay bahagi ng annual military exercises na nagsimula noong nakaraang buwan, tinawag na Balikatan, Tagalog para sa “shoulder-to-shoulder,” kabilang ang mahigit sa 16,000 American at Philippine military personnel.
Ang exercises ngayong taon ng longtime treaty allies, ay sinasabing di umano’y sinadya upang hadlangan ang posibleng agresyon.
“They come against the backdrop of China’s increasingly assertive actions in the disputed South China Sea, where Chinese and Philippine coast guards and accompanying ships have had several increasingly tense faceoffs since last year,” ayon sa ulat.
Sa kabilang dako, mahigit naman sa 250 French at Australian forces ang nagpartisipa kasama ang ilang observers mula sa ilang kaalyado at security partner nations, sa pangunguna ng Japan at European nations. ang drills, nagsimula noong April 22, magtatapos ngayong linggo.
Sa ‘mock battle scenario’ nito lamang araw ng Lunes, ang American at Filipino forces ay nagsagawa ng airfield drills, pinaliligiran ng mga mabababang burol kung saan ang tatlong Army CH-47 Chinook helicopters ay lumapag para maghatid ng combat supplies.
Sinabi naman ni Marine 1st Lt. Annie Pentaleri na ang aerial combat reconnaissance at counter-reconnaissance drills ay pinlano rin sa mga far-flung region.
“We are absolutely battle-ready and that’s what we train for day in and day out,” ayon naman kay Marine Maj. Robert Patterson sabay sabing “It’s important to enhance inter-operability with our Filipino counterparts.”
Kapuwa nilinaw ng Washington at Manila na ang drills ay hindi nakadirekta sa anumang bansa at mahalaga para sa pagtugon sa mga emergency sa Pilipinas, itinuturing na isa sa “most disaster-prone countries” sa buong mundo.
Gayunman, ang drills ngayong taon ay nakatuon sa territorial defense at pangunahing ginagawa sa itinuturing na “two of the most sensitive fault lines in the regional rivalry between China and the United States: the disputed South China Sea and the Bashi Channel.”
“The critical waterway between Taiwan and the Philippines, an important trade conduit laden with international undersea cables, has been closely watched and guarded by Chinese and American forces.
