MANILA, Philippines- Muling ipinamalas ng Filipino math aces ang husay nila matapos mag-uwi ng 19 medalya mula sa katatapos lamang na 21st International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) sa China.
Nasungkit ng Philippine “mathletes,” kapwa mga estudyante mula sa iba’t ibang public ay private schools sa buong bansa ang isang gold, 10 silver at walong bronze medals sa 18-nation competition.
Ginanap ang IMSO mula Oktubre 1 hanggang 6 sa University of Chinese Academy of Sciences sa port city ng Wenzhou sa Zhejiang province.
Nasa 300 math-gifted students mula sa mga sumusunod na bansa ang nakilahok sa kompetisyon: Botswana, Bulgaria, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong at China.
Pinangalanan ni Dr. Simon Chua, pinuno ng Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Phils. (MTG) na nagging mentor ng Filipino math wizards, ang nag-iisang gold medalist ng team na si Heal Job Esio, isang Grade 6 student ng Pangasinan Universal Institute sa Dagupan City.
Ang silver medalists naman ay sina Elizur Daniel Anabieza ng Divine Light Academy Bacoor; Bianca Jayne Ong at Annette Tiffany Yu ng St. John’s Institute Bacolod; Ezekiel Anton Tan, Mishael Oikos Chan at Yingqi Lu ong f St. Jude Catholic School; Steve Jacob Yu ng Xavier School; Leonard Vash Cay ng Xavier School Nuvali; Savannah Lucia Sabeen de Guzman ng St. Paul College Pasig at Sophia Yzabel Tiu ng Special Education Center for the Gifted.
Samantala, ang bronze medal winners ay sina Eunice Gaerlan ng BHC Institution; Erin Leighton Go at Carlo Aceret ng St. Jude Catholic School; Kaylee Nichole Tan ng Pangasinan Universal Institute; Miguel Yee ng St. John’s Institute Bacolod; Issaiah Sean Escobido ng Iloilo Scholastic Academy; Alexander Gabriel Ho ng Paco Citizen Academy at Anne Dorothy Madrazo ng Timoteo Paez Elementary School.
Ang math team leaders naman ay sina Renard Eric Chua at Minerva Bianca Avecilla habang sina Ivan Aguilar, Jay Gabata at Jonabel Quintana ang nanguna sa science squad.
“Our mathletes continue to make the nation, as well as their respective schools, families and other support groups proud with their string of contest victories,” wika ni Chua.
Nilalayon ng MTG, itinatag noong Oktubre 1995 at kasalukuyang nangangasiwa ng 60-plus training centers sa buong bansa, na isabatas ang math education at training sa bansa. RNT/SA
