Solon dismayado sa napakabagal na internet connection sa bansa

MANILA, Philippines – “Hindi na nag-improve.”

Iyan ang sintimyento ni Makati City Rep Luis Campos kaugnay sa hindi na umayos na internet connection sa bansa, aniya, kulang na kulang ang ginagawa ng mga telecommunications companies lalo pagdating sa mobile Internet kaya naman kulelat pa rin sa global internet speed ranking ang Pilipinas.

Ayon kay Campos sa May 2024 Global Speedtest Index na isinagawa mula No. 83 ay naging 87 pa ang internet ranking ng bansa.

Pagdating sa ASEAN, ang Pilipinas ay ika 6 mula sa 10 Asean member countries.

Sa Asean countries una sa listahan na may mabilis na mobile internet speeds ang Brunei (107.40 Mbps); Singapore (99.29 Mbps,; Malaysia (95.66 Mbps,); Vietnam (52.15 Mbps) at Thailand (48.76 Mbps).

“Telecommunication companies are simply not doing enough to improve their networks. This is why we want Congress to pass a new law so that the government can set compulsory deadlines for telcos to deliver faster mobile internet speeds under pain of punitive regulatory fines,” pahayag ni Campos.

“We want accelerating mobile Internet speeds to improve public access to online resources, government services, education, and new opportunities,” dagdag pa nito.

Si Campos na Vice chairman ng House Committee on Appropriations ay nagsusulong na maisabatas ang House Bill (HB) No.10215 kung saan ang pagkakaroon ng high-speed Internet connection ay maipapasama sa mga basic telecommunication service na karapatan ng bawat Pinoy.

“The reclassification would empower the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to impose rising minimum mobile internet speed targets that telcos must hit within prescribed deadlines. Telcos that are unable to reach the target speeds would be subjected to severe fines of up to P1 million per day, or P365 million per year, until they achieve compliance,” nakasaad sa panukala ni Campos.

Noong Abril 2024 ang Speedtest rankings ng Pilipinas ay ika-79 kung saan ang mobile internet speed ay nasa 32.37 Mbps. Gail Mendoza
