THE Valenzuela City government has approved twin ordinances that set aside a total of P8.2-million as financial and in-kind assistance to the victims of Typhoon ‘Opong’ in Bicol Region and the devastating Sept. 30 magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Cebu province.

Mayor Wes Gatchalian hailed the quick response of the city council led by its presiding officer, Vice Mayor Marlon Alejandrino, for passing the two measures that would ensure the availability of the funds to be given to the affected areas.

“In response to the catastrophic damage left by Typhoon Opong especially in Masbate and its neighboring localities, and the 6.7 magnitude earthquake in Cebu, the Valenzuela City government will provide financial or in-kind assistance to give them the necessary resources to recover from the disasters they have endured,” Gatchalian told Good Riddance.

“With the two ordinances passed by the city council, the local government has been authorized to acquire funding from the Quick Response Fund of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund,” he added.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod (city council) said the first measure was for the allocation of P5.4-million in the form of cash or in-kind for the typhoon-hit areas in Bicol Region.

The other ordinance was for the setting aside of P2.8-million intended for earthquake-affected areas in Cebu province.

Earlier this month, Ompong devastated a large portion of Masbate, including some of its neighboring towns, wherein it caused widespread destruction to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
